low yield review
By nycmedstudent
I can see why no one at my school ever talks about using this book. The cases are ok but nearly all the questions involve one step reasoning, so are not very helpful for Step 1 and probably wouldn't have been helpful for the rote memorization required for my basic science course exams. I did finish the book but in retrospect I think it probably was not a high yield use of the time it took to get through it.

I am an MS3 have have used case files for shelf exams and these books for the clinical aspects of med school have been good but this one, not so much. Kaplan 2010 Step 1 Biochem videos were a better use of time than this book.

By Random Med Student
I have been using these case file books for extra studying in medical school. I would prefer a case narratives over random facts any day.

The book operates like this: a story about a patient followed by the science behind their symptoms and disease and then ending with treatment options. A beginning, middle, and end, if you will.

I think the biggest qualm that med students might find with this book is that it doesn't offer quick review or bullets. But I think the extra time spent reading instead of skimming bullet points is worth it.

Fall of the Imam: Nawal El Saadawi, by Nawal Sadawi

This powerful and poetic novel by "Egypt's most interesting feminist" (Booklist ) raises awareness of the predicament of women in Egypt. The book tells the story of Bint Allah, a beautiful illegitimate girl, whose father is the Imam—the religious ruler in Islamic society believed to be representative of God. Bint Allah is falsely accused by the Imam of adulterous relationships, then sentenced to death by stoning. It is through the eyes of Bint Allah that one can see the underlying hypocrisy of a male-dominated religious state.

El Saadawi in Idaho
By C. Norden
Having just finished teaching this novel in a history of the novel course to a group of college students in Idaho, I am struck by how little problem these young adults seem to have had with El Saadawi's narrative style. The problems cited with the readability of the English translation seem less to do with a flawed translation, and more to do with a narrative style motivated by two concerns primarily: a) how to represent women's experience in a patriarchal & fundamentalist society in which women are not allowed a voice, and particularly not a public, authoritative voice of the sort which the traditional novel usually depends, and b) how to create a coherent portrait of a society that is tragically divided against itself, both on ideological and class grounds, as well as in terms of gender roles.

Understood in these terms, a fragmented narrative that suggests that women's experience in such an environment is both everyone's and no-one's, and that it is only with great difficulty that we can assert with certainty that a particular set of events occurred at all, much less to person Y, and with what specific social, familial, psychological, and emotional consequences. The core image of the novel is the stoning (or knifing, or shooting) death of a woman who has been unjustly accused of having "corrupted" either a top religious leader, or a top governmental leader, or one or several other top cabinet members, including a so-named Great Writer, one empowered to provide official versions of the society's recent history and doings. This is pretty clearly El Saadawi's tip off to the reader, suggesting that she is in some fashion trying to model what a feminine "ecriture" or way of writing would look and sound like, at least one version of such, along with the strong suggestion that such writing would be forbidden, persecuted, and likely misunderstood by those for whom the official narrative was still cogent and compelling.

So no, the problem is not a bad translation, but rather unimaginative or context deficient reading. For what it's worth, the novel spoke eloquently to a significant number of young people in one of our most theocratic and socially conservative states, students who in fact praised the poetry and lyricism of both the novel and its English translation.

Brilliant, Complex and A Bit of a Challenge
By Amanda D. Muir
The interwoven stories of residents of an unspecified Egyptian town and the Imam for whom their worlds revolve, The Fall of the Imam is profound, poetic, and complex. The narration is uncovential in English and does pose some challenge for English speaking readers. First person and third person narration seem to be employed interchangeably, with the perspective switching from character to character frequently. I suspect that in the Arabic in which it was written, The Fall of the Imam is beautiful and brilliant. The English translation, however, may prove somewhat difficult for western readers. Regardless, it is a worthwhile read and does provide a glimpse into a world many westerners are largely unfamiliar with.

The Fall of the Imam
By Naqi S. Raza
This book is an account of a patriarchal society in a middle eastern country. Suffice to say it contains a heavy dose of realism and confusing metaphors simultaneously. I found the storyline hard to follow; too much switching between characters; and once again the metaphors were extremely confusing and hard to follow. All in all it seems as though the book has been written in arabic and translated word for word without consideration of any gramatical writing effects.

Gender, War, and Conflict (Gender and Global Politics), by Laura Sjoberg

From Pakistan to Chechnya, Sri Lanka to Canada, pioneering women are taking their places in formal and informal military structures previously reserved for, and assumed appropriate only for men. Women have fought in wars, either as women or covertly dressed as men, throughout the history of warfare, but only recently have they been allowed to join state militaries, insurgent groups, and terrorist organizations in unprecedented numbers.

This begs the question - how useful are traditional gendered categories in understanding the dynamics of war and conflict? And why are our stories of gender roles in war typically so narrow? Who benefits from them? In this illuminating book, Laura Sjoberg explores how gender matters in war-making and war-fighting today. Drawing on a rich range of examples from conflicts around the world, she shows that both women and men play many more diverse roles in wars than either media or scholarly accounts convey. Gender, she argues, can be found at every turn in the practice of war; it is crucial to understanding not only ‘what war is’, but equally how it is caused, fought and experienced.

With end of chapter questions for discussion and guides to further reading, this book provides the perfect introduction for students keen to understand the multi-faceted role of gender in warfare. Gender, War and Conflict will challenge and change the way we think about war and conflict in the modern world.

Review
''Laura Sjoberg has written a valuable, teachable and up-to-the-minute gender-smart book about war. With its mix of gritty case studies and Big Questions, Gender, War and Conflict offers lucky readers the tools to reassess mainstream International Relations' theories and to start fashioning explanations of their own.''
Cynthia Enloe, Clark University

"Laura Sjoberg's book is a feminist international relations primer for the real world. She shows that we can’t understand - let alone end - wars and conflicts if we don’t understand the masculinities and femininities that fuel them.  This is the book that everyone - students, academics, and policy-makers - needs to read."

This is an amazing book for those who are interested in the topic

This is an amazing book for those who are interested in the topic. It might be beneficial to know background knowledge of the subject since this is more academic, but not necessary. At the end of each chapter there are other books that the author suggests for further reading if it interests you!
Really interesting book and a very easy read.

Too academic
By dhasenan
This is a rather academic approach to the topic and seems mostly disconnected from anything practical. If you want to know how women are involved in wars, you should look elsewhere. If you want to learn that the real reason that countries go to war is because they take on gender roles, with poor justification for this claim, this book is for you.

Mediterranean Winter, by Robert D. Kaplan

In Mediterranean Winter, Robert D. Kaplan, the bestselling author of Balkan Ghosts and Eastward to Tartary, relives an austere, haunting journey he took as a youth through the off-season Mediterranean. The awnings are rolled up and the other tourists are gone, so the damp, cold weather takes him back to the 1950s and earlier—a golden, intensely personal age of tourism.

Decades ago, Kaplan voyaged from North Africa to Italy, Yugoslavia, and Greece, luxuriating in the radical freedom of youth, unaccountable to time because there was always time to make up for a mistake. He recalls that journey in this Persian miniature of a book, less to look inward into his own past than to look outward in order to dissect the process of learning through travel, in which a succession of new landscapes can lead to books and artwork never before encountered.

Kaplan first imagines Tunis as the glow of gypsum lamps shimmering against lime-washed mosques; the city he actually discovers is even more intoxicating. He takes the reader to the ramparts of a Turkish kasbah where Carthaginian, Roman, and Byzantine forts once stood: “I could see deep into Algeria over a rib-work of hills so gaunt it seemed the wind had torn the flesh off them.” In these austere and aromatic surroundings he discovers Saint Augustine; the courtyards of Tunis lead him to the historical writings of Ibn Khaldun.

Kaplan takes us to the fifth-century Greek temple at Segesta, where he reflects on the ill-fated Athenian invasion of Sicily. At Hadrian’s villa, “Shattered domes revealed clouds moving overhead in countless visions of eternity. It was a place made for silence and for contemplation, where you wanted a book handy. Every corner was a cloister. No view was panoramic: each seemed deliberately composed.”

Kaplan’s bus and train travels, his nighttime boat voyages, and his long walks in one archaeological site after another lead him to subjects as varied as the Berber threat to Carthage; the Roman army’s hunt for the warlord Jugurtha; the legacy of Byzantine art; the medieval Greek philosopher Georgios Gemistos Plethon, who helped kindle the Italian Renaissance; twentieth-century British literary writing about Greece; and the links between Rodin and the Croa-
tian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic. Within these pages are smells, tastes, and the profundity of chance encounters. Mediterranean Winter begins in Rodin’s sculpture garden in Paris, passes through the gritty streets of Marseilles, and ends with a moving epiphany about Greece as the world prepares for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

Mediterranean Winter is the story of an education. It is filled with memories and history, not the author’s alone, but humanity’s as well.

From Publishers Weekly
Many recent travel memoirs have focused on the personal minutiae of a journey, but Atlantic Monthly correspondent Kaplan (Balkan Ghosts) is a breed apart. Similar to classic writers like Lawrence Durrell and Henry Miller, Kaplan relates only a scant amount of detail about himself and why he's traveling. Particulars about quirky characters and minor annoyances are rare. Instead, he uses graceful prose to describe the history of the ground on which he walks and his absorption with events that happened centuries before he bought his first plane ticket. A visit to Carthage isn't merely a cozy ride through a pleasant landscape; as his train surges forward, he summons up the first foreign invasion from the Phoenician city-state of Tyre. With his lyrical writing style, Kaplan makes factual summations into slowly unraveling, luxurious tales. "The founding of Carthage is clothed in sumptuous myth," he writes. Sometimes, however, this approach interferes with coherence. The richness of the prose and the depth to which Kaplan delves into the past can make his actual travel experiences somewhat jarring. (When he collects a $40 check for freelance work from the Christian Science Monitor, it's as if Hannibal had suddenly strolled into the American Express office.) But generally, the discord between Kaplan's everyday reality and his intellectual wanderings makes for a sweet mix. And because he dips so liberally into history and goes into such detail about ancient peoples, it doesn't matter that Kaplan's visits to the Mediterranean actually took place in the 1970s. His love for antiquity, much like his writing, is timeless.

From Booklist
Kaplan was an unknown freelance writer 28 years ago when, fresh from college, he embarked on the journey this volume chronicles. The author has since worked his way to the summit of the travel-writing business through such works as Eastward to Tartary (2000). The newness of the travel experience, and discovering ways to best digest it, is, therefore, a theme in Kaplan's recollection of this formative trip, which runs parallel to his description of people and places. Unerring avenues into a locale's historical and contemporary personality are works by other travelers. Thus allusions to titles ranging from antiquity (Sallust's Jugurthine War) to the present are interwoven with Kaplan's itinerary, which culminates in meeting, in a remote part of Greece, with British travel author Patrick Leigh Fermor. Kaplan observes that "real adventure is not about risk but the acquisition of knowledge." That comment may well stand as the precept of this mellow, evocative tour of the Mediterranean in the off-season. Sure to delight Kaplan's many fans. Gilbert Taylor

Review
“In this colorful book, we watch the author—America’s premier traveler and ‘muddy boots’ analyst—grow from an uncertain twenty-year-old to an adept, mature commentator. The book cuts back and forth across the decades, from the docks of Tunis to the sunburned hills of Sicily and across to Athens, which Kaplan early recognized (and loves) as the world’s first third-world city. The book is like a glass of retsina—thrilling, but likely to cause a catch at the back of the throat—as one regards, through Kaplan’s eyes, the slaughter and cruelty that have always accompanied the glories of Mediterranean civilization.”
—Geoffrey Wawro, professor of strategic studies at the U.S. Naval War College, anchor of the History Channel’s Hardcover History

“Mediterranean Winter is a beautiful book. We have come to expect carefully articulated and cogent history from Robert Kaplan, but what is unexpected here is the lyrical grace of his writing, and also the deep, personal attachment to the places and people he introduces us to. I felt as if I were traveling by his side on this unusual journey to some of the world’s most ancient civilizations.”
—Jane Alexander, former chair of the National Endowment for the Arts

In the footsteps of Patrick Leigh Fermor…
By John P. Jones III
…as well as others.

I’ve read a number of the works of Robert Kaplan, starting with Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History) some three decades ago. Most recently, I read a Vine offering of his, In Europe's Shadow: Two Cold Wars and a Thirty-Year Journey Through Romania and Beyond, about Romania. He brings a powerful erudition to his works, and therefore they are always most worthwhile, though at times he seems to lack empathy for “the ragged people” to use a phrase from Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.”

This work concerns Kaplan’s trips to the central Mediterranean region, namely Tunisia and Sicily, in the winter of 1975-76, as well as the coast of Dalmatia and parts of Greece, between 1971 and 1978. And it concerns his re-visits to these areas over the subsequent decades. On his trips in the ‘70’s, he was “just a kid,” often stayed in the part of town “where the ragged people go,” and could not possibly have known the historical background to the places visited. In short, he was like a lot of us who traveled in our ‘20’s… trying to take it all in, and hoping to gain the historical and cultural perspective later. Certainly a leading practitioner of youthful travel and write-about-it-later is Patrick Leigh Fermor, who walked from the coast of Holland through Nazi Germany to Constantinople in the 1930’s; decades later he would describe this walk in three volumes, commencing with A Time of Gifts: On Foot to Constantinople: From the Hook of Holland to the Middle Danube (New York Review Books Classics). Kaplan mentions Fermor on page 13. Like Fermor, Kaplan wrote about his youthful travels decades later, overlaying his initial experiences with scholarly erudition on the rise and fall of civilizations in these ancient lands.

Kaplan’s Mediterranean trip starts, as it does for so many, when he arrives at St. Charles station in Marseilles. He notes the influx of people from the Med’s southern shore, and the corresponding change in the city’s character. Soon, he is on a boat for Tunisia, and with his latter knowledge tells the tale of the initial settlement of Carthage by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BCE. Kaplan says that it was in Tunisia that he really learned to think about the Roman Empire… and he goes on to describe the area’s destruction in the Punic Wars. Then the Vandals came, and subsequently the Arabs. Both Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky drew major artistic inspiration from the country. One of Kaplan’s guides is Flaubert’s By Gustave Flaubert - Salammbo (Penguin Classics) (7/26/77), which he repeatedly references. There is a bit of the author in his accounts, but mainly it is the history and culture of the country.

Sicily was the biggest surprise, since I knew the least about it, and Kaplan traveled from end to end, and up to down. Corinth established Syracuse as a major colony. Aeschylus would write Prometheus Bound (Dover Thrift Editions) there. Archimedes would die there, in fighting during the Punic Wars. Roger, and his son, Roger II, originally from Hauteville, near St. Lo, in northern France, would establish and rule a cosmopolitan and generally tolerant kingdom at Palermo, which was the second most populated city in Europe in the early 12th century (after Constantinople).

Kaplan traveled up the boot of Italy, and devoted a chapter to Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli, and repeatedly referenced Marguerite Yourcenar’s Memoirs of Hadrian (FSG Classics). He crosses the Adriatic, and experiences Diocletian’s palace at Split, and later incisively describes how Dubrovnik (formerly Ragusa) was able to maintain its independence as a city-state for so long.

His last country of call is Greece. One again, I found his descriptions of Mistra, near ancient Sparta, equally informative. For the finale, Kaplan ventures down into Mani, the southern most peninsula of mainland Greece, to the town of Kardamyli, to see “the last pasha of the Mediterranean,” in his home. “The walking sticks I had seen, the layers of sweaters and the ruddy complexion spoke of a healthy life in chilly rooms.” The year is 2002, and Kaplan’s host is the 87-year old Patrick Leigh Fermor (who would remain active until his final day, at the age of 96). Georgios Gemistros Plethon was a philosopher in the Middle Ages, and resident at Mistra. Fermor and Kaplan were discussing him, and Kaplan says of Fermor: “Here in full force was the erudition that flavor’s every page of Fermor’s books: the unearthing from expert sources of what is so worthwhile to know, but which so few of us do know.”

Kaplan continues the tradition as a spiritual fellow-traveler of Fermor’s. 5-stars.

This is travel writing the way it was meant to be - Informative, concise and illuminating.

Kaplan relives his journeys from many years ago as he first travelled through the Mediterranean struggling with being a free-lance writer. Most of the book is recollections from more than 20 years ago although there are comments from recent trips back to some of the locations and a wonderful recent interview with Patrick Leigh Fermor, author of A Time of Gifts, and other well-known travel books.

The down-side of reporting on these decades-old journeys is that some of the spontaneity and opinion is lost. I find that sometimes I learn more from disagreeing with a travel writers' hasty opinion than in boring, well-edited neutral reporting. However, in this case, I think that the elapsed time has given this account nuances and a filtered content that add to the writing. It's as if the ensuing decades have concentrated the meaning and subtleties of the journey.

The part on Tunisia was replete with history of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Berbers, and Carthaginians. Sicily was filled with the Greek influences on this place. Dalmatia, in previous Yugoslavia, and Greece were well-represented.

I confess I particularly enjoyed the recent encouter with Patrick Leigh Fermor who in his 80's is working on the last book of the trilogy about his travels in the 30's on foot from Holland to Constantinople. If you haven't read his first two, you need to.

Kaplan also includes a list of books that he considers essential to understanding these regions. It is excellent and is a good start to understanding these areas in depth.

Overall, excellent and gripping - which is hard in travel writing.

Mediterranean Winter is not the book to begin with in reading Robert D. Kaplan books. It lacks the energy and presence that some of his other books have. John Julius Norwich in his Byzantine books covers much of this territory, and he obviously loves history. Kaplan loves travel more than history, and it appears difficult for him to reconstruct old travels from his journals.

These comments should not prejudice you against Kaplan's books. Start with Monsoon: The Indian Ocean and the Future of American Power and you will be rewarded with energetic and informative travel writing that includes the history of the area in an enlightening way.

Then the reader will be in a position to choose from the other Kaplan books.

Wonderful pocket reference
By A Customer
As an NP student, I needed a condensed reference book. This one is it! All of the body systems explained very briefly with wonderful conceptual models and diagrams, fetal circulation, etc. There are pictures of bones, muscles, veins, all the basics.
Included are tables with chemistry and lab values and some reasons for abnormals, which muscles/tendons move what, planes of the body, cells and their functions, pictures of different kinds of tissues, teeth, cranial nerves, dermatomes, you name it, it's in here!
It's like having three or four books in one. Well worth the money, in my opinion. And it fits in your pocket or small enough to go with your 20 other books in your book bag! Great for students and new practitioners. And for those who would like a good reference book that is portable.

Just What I Needed!!
By PaganDeva2000
I said a prayer two days ago, and asked for a book that explained anatomy in simple terms that I understand, and then, I walked into the college bookstore and saw this. First of all, ANYTHING by Mosby would be purchased by me, and this is no exception! Now, this is a small, compact book that you can carry anywhere, to the supermarket, on the train, even to class rather than the large textbooks that are also needed. While much more of the information may be in the text, this is a great supplement, because anything that you need to add, there is room on many of the pages to include your own notes. Now, I know I will make it through Anatomy, as well as on my way to become a nurse! GET THIS BOOK!!

I am an RN who is planning to go back to nurse practitioner school next year and needed to "brush-up" on A and P so I purchased this book and am for the most part pleased. Great size to bring with me to work, to the beach, in the car, anywhere. Pictures and diagrams are very clean and nicely labeled and for the most part it is a good review, however, it does not explain much if any physiology. This is the only downside to it. But it is a great reminder of anatomy for someone who has had A and P before. I recommend it to anyone who needs to "brush-up".

If you're in business to WIN, read this book!
By Michael Davis
Strategy and tactics are essential to all entrepreneurs wanting to not only be successful, but to win! Playing to win is a mindset as pointed out in the April 2004 Harvard Business Review - "Hardball: Five Killer Strategies for Trouncing the Competition." In "The Portable MBA Guide to Strategy" you will learn to formulate and execute effective marketplace strategies that enable you to transform your ideas into marketplace reality.

Divided into four parts, numerous experts expound upon what is strategy and how to use it to win in business:

Part One - Strategy: Winning in the Marketplace

Part Two - Strategy Inputs: Analyzing the External and Internal Environments

Part Three - Strategy Making: Identifying and Evaluating Strategic Alternatives

Part Four - Managing Strategic Change: Linking Strategy and Action

If you went to business school, this will be a great refresher. If not, this book will cover all the bases and create a solid strategic foundation applicable to the real world.

It's hard for me to say where to start; The Portable MBA is a cornucopia of indispensable knowledge. Chapter 5, Strategy for the Small Business seems like a logical place to start. And, if you're looking for funding, pay close attention to Box 5.4 on p. 124 for key questions to ask yourself. Chapter 6 on Digital Strategy is also compelling in its own right. While much of the book applies to larger entities, it is wise to study the material for two reasons; 1) It will help you learn how to build your company and 2) Studying larger competitors is tantamount to military generals learning the ways of their adversaries.

Winning Ways for Planning Pilots
By Craig L. Howe
Strategic planning was once the sole responsibility of senior management. In today's business climate of shortened product cycles, ruthless price competition and global access to markets, the burden has spread to include middle managers. This new Portable MBA volume is the eighth in the series. It offers insights from 16 leading business school professors at Harvard, Boston University, Maryland, Northwestern, Dartmouth, Michigan, Stanford, Wharton and the Cranfield School of Management in England and five prominent consultants. Each contributor is not only an expert, but experienced putting into practice the principles and methodologies discussed in the chapter.
Whether tackling business, corporate or global strategy issues or analyzing industrial, technological, organizational and political factors, The Portable MBA in Strategy defines the planner's current vocabulary. It also offers practical solutions to implement plans in any business environment.
The book reduces a successful strategy to its four component parts -- the marketplace for the strategy; the inputs required for a successful plan, the opportunities for corporate transformation and the steps required to transfigure the plan into reality. Each chapter starts with an engaging case study to illustrate its theme. The result is a practical, readable, and comprehensive look at business strategy; appropriate whether the reader is the owner of small business or the manager of a vast global enterprise.

THE introduction to Astrobiology: A chapter by chapter review
By Steve Reina
Are we alone in the universe? This might well be the next BIG QUESTION science answers.

Though of course Cockell will not provide readers with the location and identity of our nearest extra terrestrial neighbors he does give readers an excellent introduction to what that life may be like and where it may be found.

PLEASE NOTE; As I give chapter descriptions I will also give some other suggested readings, some of which are made by Professor Cockell and some which I humbly submit for consideration. Unless otherwise indicated please assume such readings are from Professor Cockell.

Chapter 1: Astrobiology and Life. Here Cockell traces out the prehistory of extra terrestrial studies. He discusses ancient thoughts and appropriately the speculations of Giordano Bruno who literally died for his belief in other worlds. To my eye the best feature of this chapter is Cockell's treatment of the great Erwin Schrodinger book: What is Life? (1944) Where I found Schrodinger's original prose more muddled and hard to follow Cockell neatly got to the heart of matters explaining clearly why life does not violate the second law of thermodynamics -- entropy -- but rather facilitates it.

The main other reading Cockell and I would site would be Schrodinger's What is Life?

Chapter 2: Matter the Stuff of Life. This chapter discusses gases, liquids and solids.

By way of additional reading Cockell recommends D. Tabor's Gases, Liquids and Solids. It looks like a good title but I haven't read it yet.

Chapter 3: Life's Structure. This is a great chapter where Cockell recounts different chemistries and solutions life might arise from. Science fiction fans will really like this one a lot!

Here Cockell recommends Peter Ward's excellent Life as We Do Not Know It (which I would also recommend). I would also recommend Isaac Asimov's Left Hand of the Electron. Like this chapter Asimov's book has chapters on chirality and different types of solvents. Plus, it's an Asimov book!

Chapter 4: Life's Structure. What is life? By this I mean what forms of recurring organic phenomenon constitute life. Eschewing the fruitless philosophical direction this chapter could take Cockell expertly focuses on the real inquiry and in so doing mightily informs readers about the borderline of existence.

Here Cockell recommends A. Pross' What is Life?

Chapter 5: Energy for Life. This chapter is interesting for how it could shed light (no pun intended) on the prospects for life on bodies like Europa where sunlight is rare. If Earth's biomass overwhelmingly relies on solar power would feed life on worlds like Europa?

Here Cockell recommends O. Morton's Eating the Sun.

Chapter 6: Tree of Life. This book discusses the inter relationship between life on Earth. Like everything Cockell writes it's awesome.

For his part here Cockell recommends books like Gould's Wonderful Life and E.O. Wilson's Diversity of Life. Here I'd recommend Richard Dawkins' Ancestor's Tale.

Chapter 8: Elements of Life. This is sort of a top down view and richly enlightening.

Here Cockell recommends Cosmos by Carl Sagan (which like everyone else I loved), Martin Rees' Our Cosmic Habitat and Lawrence Krauss' Universe from Nothing (a recommendation I would happily join in).

Chapter 9: Astrochemistry. This chapter builds nicely from chapter 8.

Here Cockell recommends S. Kwok's Stardust: Cosmic Seeds of Life.

Chapter 10: Early Earth. This chapter is richly illuminating for how much new information we've recently gathered about the early formation of our planet.

Here Cockell recommends J.I. Lunine's Earth: Evolution of a Habitable World.

Chapter 11: Origins of Life. According to Charles Darwin it all began in a warm pond somewhere, proving him prophetic at least as to the water based part of his prediction. For me this chapter alone justified the price of this book.

Here Cockell recommends D. Deamer's First Life. For my part I would I recommend Nick Lane's The Vital Question.

Chapter 12: History of Earth. Just like how chapter 9 builds logically from 8 chapter 12 builds logically from 11.

Here Cockell recommends R.M. Hazen's The Story of Earth.

Chapter 13: The Rise of Oxygen. How did Earth go from being an oxygen poor world (in terms of its atmosphere) to an oxygen rich one? Today Mars and Venus are perhaps most different from Earth -- and like each other -- for their similar carbon dioxide rich atmospheres, a feature Earth does NOT share. Why this is might be the most interesting question for biosphere science.

Here I would recommend Nick Lane's Oxygen.

Chapter 14: Mass Extinctions. Here Cockell does amazing work succinctly giving readers the basics on this issue.

He and I would both strongly recommend Benton's When Life Nearly Died.

Chapter 15: Habitability of Planets. As always Cockell does an awesome job giving readers the basics. Is life common? To answer this you need to know common habitable worlds are.

He and I would both strongly recommend Peter Ward's Rare Earth.

Chapter 16: Astrobiology of Mars. This might be Cockell's most strong chapter for how he brings all the threads together while admittedly the huge tracts of ignorance which sadly still characterize our (lack of) knowledge about the Red Planet.

Here Cockell recommends Pyle and Mannings' Destination Mars.

Chapter 17: Moons of Giant Planets. This is another VERY STRONG chapter, made even better by Cockell's expert use of very good source material. See book recommendations. In my opinion no place more than Europa gives us hope for life off Earth yet still in our solar system.

Here Cockell -- and I -- both recommend Lornez' Titan Revealed and Greenberg's Unmasking Europa.

Chapter 18: Exoplanets. Cockell provides a circa 2014 state of exoplanets. Wisely he tells readers to keep posted with current developments as well.

Here he recommends Seager's Exoplanets but I would also recommend anything by Dimitar Sasselov. I'm a huge fan of his.

Chapter 19: Search for ET. This is a just fun chapter, much like chapter 3.

Here Cockell recommends Paul Davies' Eerie Silence, a very good book, and Carl Sagan's Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe.

Chapter 20: Our Civilization. Or: Our Interstellar Future? The question mark is mine here

Here Cockell recommends Dr. Zubrin's Case for Mars, an excellent book. He also mentions his own book Space on Earth which would also be a good work because Cockell wrote it.

OH AND YEAH...I messed up. In writing this I inadvertently forgot to mention Cockells chapter on the Limits of the Biosphere which is too bad because it was a great chapter. Interested readers would do well to also read Cockell's Impossible Extinction.

If you got nothing else from this review get this: this is an excellent summary of this important topic and more than worth the price of the book. Indeed certain chapters alone would justify the price.

Great intro to astrobiology
By R. Knight
I took the Coursera Astrobiology course with Professor Cockell and loved it. I highly recommend this book as a first step into learning more about astrobiology. You'll be more informed on how life evolves, the impact life has on the environment, and how we can detect that on other planets even in other solar systems.

Astrobiology is a very exciting area of study as we are closing in on finding life on other planets and I recommend this book to start your journey.

Life on the Earth and beyond, easily understood.
By Lauren S. Rogers
I teach high school astronomy, and I took Prof. Cockell's online astrobiology course on Coursera. Twice. It was a great course, and this book is a great volume to accompany the course or to read alone.
