About the Author

Leslie Hamilton is Associate Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University (formerly Leeds Metropolitan University) and holds an MSc in Economics from the University of Hull. He has taught International Business Environment and the European Union for more than thirty years. Previously, at Leeds Business School, Hamilton was responsible for developing and leading a large module on the Global Business Context. He has taught in France, Germany, Hong Kong, Russia, and Spain. Hamilton worked for two years in the Netherlands researching the economic and social implications of EU policies towards the regions, and examining issues around migration. His other publications cover a variety of topics including the EU, international business, and the business environment.

Philip Webster is Associate Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University (formerly Leeds Metropolitan University). Webster was Director for Undergraduate Studies at Leeds Business School and Principal Lecturer in Business Strategy and International Business. He graduated from the University of Leeds with an MA in Economic Development and worked in financial services and the computing industry before moving into education. Philip has taught International Business Environment, Business Strategy and Business Ethics, and Corporate Social Responsibility for more than thirty years. He has taught mainly in the UK but also in India, Sabah, and Hong Kong and has also worked and lived in Malaysia.

ITALO CALVINO (1923–1985) attained worldwide renown as one of the twentieth century's greatest storytellers. Born in Cuba, he was raised in San Remo, Italy, and later lived in Turin, Paris, Rome, and elsewhere. Among his many works are Invisible Cities, If on a winter's night a traveler, The Baron in the Trees, and other novels, as well as numerous collections of fiction, folktales, criticism, and essays. His works have been translated into dozens of languages.

Brilliantly imaginative, if somewhat tedious.

To the people who hate this book, I grant you the freedom of your opinion, but I have to say, "You don't get it!" This isn't a narrative in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, Calvino has taken complex scientific principles and turned them into stories. Its true that there is a certain lack of character development, as the main character is a one-dimensional atomic particle (pun intended), but even so, Calvino makes him(it?) come alive in his tales. The true feature and attraction of these stories are the situation and worlds that Calvino creates. All that being said, I read this in the same day that I read Cosmicomics, which is a prior collections of similar stories featuring the same character (and, I think, a better book overall), and the artist's conceit wore a little thin. However, if you can give these books sufficient time and space(pun intended again), they are truly fun and beautiful.

I liked it but.........

Not surprisingly the two early reviews give it 1 and 5 respectively: a book about which it is impossible to be neutral. Confusing,dense, boring writing there is - but also some amazing mathematic/scietific concepts whch Calvino masterly spins into stories - the logic/illogic (which are probably simultaneously both the same and opposite) outcomes baffle and amaze. The final section was more rewarding (being more time-space maths based) - couldn't get a handle on the evolutionary/biological stuff. I also suspect I want to read more about the text and continually get beneath its skin. Will read bits again and again and again. (Not a tour de force of narrative analysis compared to "if on a winter's night..." and castle of crossed destinies)

Unconventional, Strange: Calvino

I love Calvino. I can think of no other writer who can spin a story that has neither plot nor standard characters and yet still give you that soul-thrill of having read a bit of undiluted (if strange) truth. T-ZERO is experimental, even by Calvino's odd-junky standards. A cell narrates the process of mitosis, and the difficulty of loving when there is no absolute, total way to KNOW the beloved. Other stories examine the relationship of time to cause and effect and, yes, Calvino leaves it to the reader to choose either the man or the lion. Prisoners attempt to escape a mutating, hallucinogenic stockade, a man is pursued (or pursuer) in a mathematical allegory set in a traffic jam, and inhuman, pre-historic, pre-life sentients chase the perfect crystals as the Earth forms. The most beautiful stories are in the opening section, MORE OF QFWQF. The story THE SOFT MOON is amazing, but if you read nothing else by Calvino read BLOOD, SEA. The closing paragraph is an inspired culmination of emotional impact. It is perfect, even in translation. Go forth, my friends, and enjoy the wonders of T-ZERO.

His anxiety about his personal shift in direction translates into concern about cultural changes: the jukebox, a symbol of regional identity and cultural diversity, is threatened by the increasing homogenization of society. After a quasimystical experience in a West Side Manhattan bar, he embarked upon a quest for the country's greatest jukebox-or rather for the greatest jukebox collection representing the golden 45s of his youthful recollection. In this account, he tells of visiting bars in Chicago; Hoboken, New Jersey; Greenville, Mississippi; and beyond, recounting conversations and adventures from his somewhat patchwork geographic, as well as personal, journey. Most absorbing are his talks with the locals as they reminisce about the early roots of the jukebox's greatest stars (Frank Sinatra, Patsy Cline, and more). This breezy quest will appeal to pop and country music fans and their libraries.

Yuppie journalist Bunch, a self-proclaimed Rear Guard Baby Boomer, takes off on a quest for the best jukebox in the country. In the process, he intends to bear witness to a bit of Americana rapidly becoming extinct. Jukeboxes saw their heyday several decades ago; now, with the advent of compact discs, stricter laws regarding drinking and driving, and encroaching suburbanization, the roadhouses that were the traditional venue for jukeboxes are, Bunch finds, down on their luck. Nevertheless, with Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, and Frank Sinatra as his spiritual guides, Bunch travels to Hoboken, hoping to confirm a rumor of an all-Sinatra jukebox; to Chicago and vicinity to meet a guy named Dale Evans, the human jukebox, and to visit the Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corp., where workers once cranked out 125 jukeboxes daily (they're down to 30 or so today); to Greenville, Mississippi, where juke joints rule over jukeboxes; and finally, to Detroit, where, at Honest? I loved Jukebox America. The author makes prose lyrical. It's a fun trip with the Spirit in the Sky, in search of the Juke of the Covenant. Anyone interested in the American musical journey will know that this is a worthwile roadtrip. It was over too soon.

If you are a fan of jukeboxes or music recorded on 45's, be aware of this book. I own a jukebox and have about 1,000 45's and didn't particularly like it. If our hero had been my age (60), liked all 50's music, then I might have identified with him and his story. Instead he was a 30's something with a yuppy mentality searching for a holy grail that doesn't exist except in his own mind. I empathized with his sadness about the loss of a bygone era, but that was about it. He threw in a part about searching for the real Elvis and here is where I thought he really missed his mark. It would be like me writing about Rudolph Valentino with no first hand knowledge of the man. Nothing was learned here. I also got tired of his political commentary along the way.

Like having a dear old friend over for dinner, SERIAL KILLER TIMELINES: ILLUSTRATED ACCOUNTS OF THE WORLD'S MOST GRUESOME MURDERS is a walk down memory lane. Not good memories, mind you, but true crime aficionados will be familiar with many (if not all) the murderers found in this book.

The first true crime book I ever read was about Randy Kraft. Kraft was so evil, his story ignited a passion to find out more about serial killers. Although the repugnant details are enough to put one off rare meat for decades, my interest has been in two areas: 1) criminology (forensics and detection), and 2) psychology (what were they thinking?). Having read the "true story" of scores of serial killers, I'm pretty sure that whatever they were thinking is not something I've ever thought (or maybe I'm just better at sublimating).

SERIAL KILLER TIMELINES is divided into five chapters, beginning with "A Lust for Killing." Cases covered are the infamous John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy, as well as the prolific Andrei Chikatilo, Pedro Lopez, Harold Shipman, and Gary Ridgeway. The second chapter, "Special Desires," includes--as you would expect--Jeffrey Dahmer and Albert Fish, as well as H.H. Holmes, Joachim Kroll, Dennis Nilsen, Edmund Kemper, and Richard Ramirez. Some of the cases go back to the late nineteenth century (such as Chapter 3's Jack the Ripper), most are from the twentieth century, and a few were active in the twenty-first century.

The third chapter is "Predators;" in addition to the Whitechapel Killer, there are David Berkowitz, Robert Hansen, Randy Kraft, The Yorkshire Ripper, and the Beltway sniper attacks. Chapter four is relatively short; its "Female Murderers" are Jane Toppan, Dorothea Puente, and Aileen Wuornos. The final chapter presents "Serial Killer Couples": the Moors Murderers, The Hillside Stranglers, and Fred and Rosemary West.

Author Chris McNab provides readers with an overview of each killer, a timeline for one of their crimes, a chronological list of crimes and known victims, and hundreds of photos. With so many killers and victims, it must have been tough to keep them straight. There are several instances where the text is contradicted by photography captions, and at least one known murder omitted from the Beltway Killers (others are buried--as they should be--so deep in my memory, I don't recall all the details). Despite these minor flaws, SERIAL KILLER TIMELINES is a noteworthy collection citing the evil that men--and women--do.

Interested readers who have never read true crime books might take this one in small doses. Reading ghastly details with which I was already familiar was not too disturbing, but those unfamiliar with the criminals and crimes might find them unsettling. Represented within SERIAL KILLER TIMELINES are some of the most horrific acts one human being can perpetrate against another.

Growing up in Spanish Harlem, Chino knew he needed three things to survive: a solid friend (his pana), a decent nickname--not some lame thing his parents had called him, like Tito or Googie--and a reputation that he would rather lose a tooth or get his ribs broken than back out of a fight. With the help of Sapo, "the meanest and ugliest kid on the block," Chino manages to make it as far as college before his life is endangered. He even attracts the attention of Nancy Saldivia, a beautiful Pentecostal girl so genuinely devout that she has earned the high school nickname "Blanca." In a typically vivid passage at the start of his debut novel, Bodega Dreams, Ernesto Quiñonez writes: Blanca wasn't allowed to wear jeans but she made up for it by wearing tight, short skirts. She always carried a Bible with her and never talked bad about anybody and at school she only hung around with her Pentecostal friend, Lucy. YA-Willie Bodega, a man of middle years, heads a syndicate that organizes the economics, justice system, and politics in Spanish Harlem. He works toward his dream of creating a rising professional class of Puerto Rican citizens with the aid of a tiny cadre of powerful, ultimately traitorous, friends. Using the voice of a barely post-adolescent youth to tell the tale of Willie's undoing, Qui-onez gives readers pitch-perfect characterizations, crisp dialogue, and plenty of action. Chino is newly married to a pregnant Pentecostalist who holds herself above barrio politics. He and his wife attend night school, work, and struggle to pay the rent. Chino's wild boyhood friend introduces him to Bodega, in a roundabout way, and against all of his better instincts, Chino begins to work for Bodega, dreams with him, and, in the end, takes his place. Realism and romantic adventurism are neatly bonded here, making this a book for eager and reluctant readers alike. In a market that is short on Latino novels of literary merit, this one stands out and demands attention from readers from all cultural backgrounds.

Daimond in the Rough

Ernesto Quinonez' debut novel, Bodega Dreams, breaks through stereotypes, and enlightens the reader to the numerous human elements that make up El Barrio. Nevertheless, his purpose is not to explain the socio-economic group dynamic that makes up contempoary East Harlem. His purpose is to tell a good story. Unfortunately, I was expecting more of the former. As an Anglo who works in a Hispanic community, I thought the book would give me more insight into how Nuyoricans view themselves within New York's Latin American Community. For instance, the reality of inter-Hispanic relations is more complex than the author lets on. Although the subject is broached (inside the precinct house), Quinonez leaves it at it's barely scratched surface.
Although these expectations were not satisfied, my curiosity as a reader of a good novel was. Quinonez' hero, Chico, doesn't take a holier than thou attitude toward the seedier characters he meets, but accepts them for who they are: hoods, drug dealers, mafiosos, and the lowlife attorney, Navarro.
The descriptions of El Barrio are first rate. The reader gets an insider's view of Quinonez' home turf: the sights, sounds and smells that make up his neighborhood. What the author fails to do is explain why Chino's love, Blanca, a devout Pentecostal, falls in love with him and gets married at such a young age, despite his continued association with the local drug pusher, Sapo. Perhaps the courtship was edited out of the original manuscript. And although Chino seems to be a decent, inteligent fellow, how these two became married while full time college students is never satisfactorily answered. The plot was interesting, pitting the black and white concepts of right and wrong against the myriad grays that represent the realities of survival and prosperity in El Barrio. The characters of Chino and Sapo were well developed, but the lesser characters were one-sided. The social conscience of Willie Bodega, the Puerto Rican Social Activist turned drug dealer, was quite unbelievable. The dialogue was interesting, and often humorous, but oftentimes highly predictable. However, the climax was somewhat surprising, and did catch me off guard. All told, I found this to be excellent debut novel, and look forward to Quinonez' next book.

Bodega Dreams is a shiny penny in the middle of nothingness. Vivid characters and fresh dialogue. Ernesto Quinonez has succeeded in accomplishing a novel that spills out sad and beautiful truths without worrying about who its spilled on. This book is reminiscent of authors such as Piri Thomas, Junot Diaz and Abraham Rodriguez Jr. but Mr. Quinonez is still able to carve his own niche into the land of Latino Literature.

Brings Back Memories of Spanish Harlem

Bodega Dreams brought back alot of memories of growing up in Spanish Harlem (Carver Projects) during the 70's and 80's. Each time I read something that would trigger a memory, I would read the section to my husband (a wonderful "redneck") and tell him that's how it was while I was growing up. The men playing dominoes outside, the congos being played on the streets, the pumps opened on a hot summer night, the salsa coming from the apartment windows...all of it brings back memories. I moved away in 1984 and moved around the country. I now call a small quiet town in Ohio home, but my family is still there. My mother still lives in the same apartment that I grew up in. I don't go back often but the memories in the book were sweet. Ernesto has captured the feel and emotions of the spanish people in harlem. For all you latinos out there, read this book...you won't be disappointed.

Comprehensive and unique

As a newcomer to standardisation work, this book has proven invaluable and my only regret is that it wasn't available when I first started work on LTE about a year ago. The book has saved me hours of tedious scouring of standards text. In this respect it is valuable both for people who are in telcos management and need an overview of LTE, as well as standards engineers who are well acquainted with the topic as it will prepare them for a more in-depth look into LTE.

Some highlights include:
1. A great introductory overview of the evolution to 4G, impartial and technically sound.
2. An in-depth analysis of the physical layer of LTE. The details include state-of-the-art simulation results and highlight the technical achievements that make the promised transfer rates and quality of service possible. The results are preceded by background theory. I found the parts on OFDM and MIMO as key enablers particularly succinct and useful. Some abstract terms, such as the notion of control channels and antenna ports, are explained in a lucid and easy-to-follow way, showing you not just what LTE mandates, but also why it is designed the way it is and what the engineering drivers behind it are.
3. An overview of higher layers, more than enough to understand how the layered paradigm is implemented in LTE.
4. The consistency of the book throughout. In my opinion you rarely see books with so many contributing authors that flow as well as this one does. Clearly, a lot of effort went into maintaining a unified style and approach, and it was well worth it.

The editors-authors are active contributors to 3GPP standardisation, and so are most of the contributing authors (with some input from academia), representing many different companies. The book therefore has a unique quality of being impartial while coming straight from the source. While only a couple of pages long, the final chapter examines the future evolution of LTE: LTE-Advanced. Thoroughly recommended.

This is a comprehensive book that covers all essential issues of LTE that are necessary in order to master this fascinating field. Key technologies are presented such as OFDM/OFDMA, SC-FDMA, Radio resource management, MIMO, ......The structure of the book is coherent in the sequence as well as the type of topics it covers: in part 1, the book covers LTE network architecture and protocols for both the control plane as well as the user plan; Part II, III cover the physical layer aspects of the Uplink and the down link in details; part IV talks about the practical deployment aspects. I strongly recommend the book for graduate students and for professionals who are working in this field. The book is an excellent reference to have at your desk for LTE standards and related issues.

Great book

The only thing that has been an issue to me is that it was a bit short on TDD. However, I do consider the book a must have for those that want an answer to the why as much as more as to the how of the standard.
