About the Author
Harold J. Rosen, PD, Hon. CSI, CCS, is retired after an illustrious career as a construction specifications writer, which includes serving as a chief of specification for the New York office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and as an independent specifications writer. He was awarded the highest honor by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) by being named an Honorary Member in recognition for his many decades of pioneering work on formats and practices for construction specifications writing.

Robert S. Weygant, CSI, CDT, SCIP, is owner of Sumex Design, a BIM consulting and development firm located in New Hampshire. He is focused on development of BIM components for manufactured products and systems while promoting the use of new interoperability standards, the integral link between BIM and construction documentation. He has been the national chair of the BIM Practice Group for CSI and a member of the Institute Technical Committee.

Mark Kalin, FAIA, FCSI, CCS, SCIP, LEED AP, is President of Kalin Associates, an independent specification consulting firm in the Boston area. He has been the national chair of the Sustainable Facilities Practice Group of the CSI and president of Specifications Consultants in Independent Practice (SCIP). For the AIA, Mark has served as chair of the MasterSpec Review Committee, and the Specifications Professional Interest Area. For CSI, he has been president of the Boston Chapter and now serves on the national CSI Technical Committee. He has also taught a course on specifications writing at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design.

John R. Regener Jr., SAIA, CCS, CCCA, CSI, SCIP, is an architect and independent specifications writer in Irvine, California, with thirty-five years of experience in producing and applying construction contract documents for commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential projects. Active in CSI education programs and leadership, he is a national leader in SCIP.

Response to Uninformed Review

The previous reviewer obviously has not read the book that he rated so low. Harold J. Rosen is an Honorary member of The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI), an honor given to few CSI members. This book, in its first edition, predates the CSI Manual of Practice, and it has been updated over several decades.

Construction Specifications Writing: Principles and Practices has been the leading textbook for teaching construction specifications at colleges and universities.

The 4th edition has been superseded by an expanded and updated 5th edition, co-authored by this reviewer, that is consistent with the CSI Manual of Practice and includes more examples and resources than CSI's MOP.

Keeping up to date and getting better

This book has a long and very fine history and tradition. Rosen was a master, but recently other masters have been used an co-authors. The book is the better for their input and is certainly a comforting teacher to all those who are new to specifications writing, or who need a resoruce to check from time to time. Simply, excellence getting better!

Classic in concept; tutorial in execution. The authors have seen fit to modify and augment the book to meet the changing world of specifications. This is a much needed, and high value book. Kudos to the authors-- high recommendation to prospective buyers and readers. Every design professional's book shelf NEEDS this book.

An understanding of Construction Specifications

I am a Intern-Architect and have little exposure to written specifications in my office. This book provides short chapters with questions at the end of each chapter. Since a lot of this reading is enough to put a person to sleep, several times over, then testing yourself with the questions at the end of the chapter and checking the answers at the end of the book help to indicate if you have a grasp of the information provided. If not, it is time to re-read the chapter. I find the book is well worth the cost if you need an understanding of Construction Specifications for the Architectural Registration Exam. Best wishes.

About the Author
Edward F. Crawley is the President of the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) in Moscow, Russia, and a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Engineering Systems at MIT. He is the founder of ACX, BioScale, DataXu, and Ekotrope, and a member four national academies of engineering. 
Bruce G. Cameron is the founder of Technology Strategy Partners (TSP), a consulting firm, and the Director of the System Architecture Lab at MIT.  He has worked with 60 Fortune 500 firms across aerospace, high tech, and consumer goods, and has built hardware currently on orbit. 
Daniel Selva is a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell. He has pioneered the use of machine learning tools in system architecture analysis, and is the recipient of Best Paper and Hottest Article awards for his work with NASA.

A composer, concert pianist, film actor and radio and TV personality, Levant (1906-1972) was best known for his musical virtuosity and caustic wit. His idiosyncratic character is brought to life in this objective and entertaining biography by Schoenberger and Kashner, who are married and teach creative writing at William and Mary College in Virginia. Levant was a close friend to composer George Gershwin, and neglected his own compositions in favor of performing Gershwin's music. (After Gershwin's death in 1937, Levant appeared in Rhapsody in Blue , the Hollywood version of Gershwin's life.) His other film apearances included parts in Humoresque (1947) and An American in Paris (1951), in both of which he honed a persona as a neurotic and cynical musician. A composer and a popular concert pianist, the multitalented Levant also acted (in films such as An American in Paris, 1951) and made memorable appearances on television talk and panel shows, where his cynical, eminently quotable wit spared no one, including himself. Publicly, Levant made light of his lifelong history of mental illness and was regarded as an amusing eccentric. Yet as this well-researched, intelligent biography shows, Levant's manic-depressive condition and crippling chemical dependencies took a toll on his private life and, eventually, his career. Readers who pick this up in search of celebrity gossip won't be disappointed, but what they'll remember is a man for whom the dividing line between brilliance and madness was painfully thin. For many years Levant was a very visible celebrity who appeared regularly on television variety shows, acted in films (playing himself at least as often as he was cast as a fictional character), and traveled the country as a concert pianist. He was also known for his quick wit, acerbic tongue, and neurotic disposition, showcased on venues such as Jack Paar's talk show, and made manifest in the three books he wrote. Kashner and Schoenberger painstakingly define the demons that stalked Levant throughout his life, creating a wonderfully illuminating portrait of this decidedly complex man. A chain-smoking hypochondriac, with a serious addiction to drugs, Levant was also an abusive husband, though he continued to be loved by his wife, June. extremely entertaining read on a fascinating man

'A Talent For Genius' is the exhaustive biography of one of the most colorful characters of American culture of the 30's and 40's: Oscar Levant.
In some ways, Levant's life proves to be even more interesting biography material than that of his good friend, the legendary George Gershwin. Perhaps this is because he lived for so much longer. Probably it is because of Levant's numerous talents other than music.
Because Levant was so social and knew so many of the luminaries of the arts of his time, this book pulls in a nice glimpse of the New York arts scene, MGM's Hollywood in the 40's & 50's, the U.S. classical music scene, and growing up Jewish in New York in the 20's.
Last but not least, Levant was a notorious wit; he was so funny that he could afford to be obnoxious and insulting and still count on being a welcome guest in the homes of his many friends. This biography captures such wit, and is entertainingly written (with tongue firmly in cheek) in its own right.
I am among those who prefer to not focus on Levant's later addiction to prescription drugs; such a living hell would seem to be too much a sad and undeserving fate for one of America's great entertainers and quirky geniuses. Here too, the subject matter is handled sensitively but unflinchingly.
The authors of this book have done a womderful job in fully depicting a very deserving and overdue subject: the life of Oscar Levant.

A Very Thorough and Touching Biography

I first developed an interest in Oscar Levant after reading about him in "Harpo Speaks". Since that time, I've read all of his three books, have listened to two of his albums, followed by the reading of this book.
This book is one of the best biographies I have ever read. It reveals the good, bad, and the ugly of Levant's character. The authors spend a little too much ink playing the role of psychoanalyst, but most of what they offer seems to make sense regarding Levant's wild behaviors.
Overall, this is a fascinating book. Levant was a true original, and this book does an excellent job of filling in the empty spaces of Levant's autobiographies.

If you want to write an interesting biography write it about an interesting person

In the opening chapter of this book the authors describe the home from which Levant came, and his Pittsburg childhood. On his mother's side they were both a very musical family, and one which had 'sarcasm and humor ' as an unending part of their talking with each other. The roots of Levant's later work are clearly in this childhood, and his specially close connection with his mother's family. Also the lively Pittsburgh world of the time, including the Colwell Street brothel and the teeming immigrant-filled streets were an essential part of the education of this very street- wise classical musician.

Levant's life involved a number of very great successes. He was a composer of more than talent, and of course arguably the best interpreter of his friend Gershwin's music.

He could be quite nasty , and a louse but it seems that many were willing to forgive him , perhaps because they appreciated his great difficulties in life. One of his famous sayings is something like, " They threw me out of the insane asylum because I was making everyone there depressed"

Levant had a career not only as classical pianist and composer, but also as TV talk- show host, and much later towards the end ' guest' on the Jack Paar show. He worked with the great musicians of his time. After a short first marriage he had a thirty - five year marriage to the singer June Gale. The couple had three children.

What is to say finally about a man who had so much talent, did so many things, but also suffered so much and was not particularly loveable many times?

About the Author
Simone Egger writes for The Age Good Food Guide and Epicure. She has authored books for adults and children and used to write guidebooks for Lonely Planet. She also used to wait tables and, for seven years, worked with a charming 1960s, stainless-steel Faema E61, brewing Italian coffee to deliver little doses of happiness. 

Ruby Ashby Orr also made espresso coffee for seven years and was known to drink up to six short blacks in a shift. Since then she’s moderated her caffeine intake (a little) and now edits books in between coffee breaks.

Just a little over two decades ago, at a conference addressed to interpersonal relationship phenomena, our host related to some of us that he had submitted a course proposal to the dean of his college suggesting that the psychology department offer a relationships course. His proposal was summarily rejected. At that time, his dean was not the only one who viewed the study of interpersonal relationships as fragmented empirically, immature conceptually, uncohesive theoretically, and lacking in the methodological rigor that characterized established lines of inquiry. Many, both inside and outside of psychology, believed the relationship field to have the potential to yield only an inchoate collection of "interesting" findings and "how to" advice to college students about their romantic relationships. Even within social psychology, the study of interpersonal relationships was regarded as teetering dangerously on the brink of the outer "edge of "soft psychology."

Today, no major research university can afford not to have a relationship course in its psychology curriculum. Scholars in virtually all of the traditional areas of psychological inquiry have come to recognize that human behavior end development take place in the context of relationships with other people, and thus, in order to accomplish psychology's aim of understanding and predicting human behavior, it is necessary to incorporate the relationship context into psychological theory and research. "Contextualism" is in ascendance in psychology, and no context is more omnipresent and omnipotent than the relationships in which people are embedded from the time they are born to the time they die. The growing recognition of the critical role that relationships play in human behavior and development is partly due to the fact that the relationship field has confronted and successfully overcome many of its conceptual and methodological obstacles and currently is drawing on and contributing to virtually all areas of psychology—including clinical, counseling, educational, industrial and organizational, developmental, and social and personality psychology, as well as behavior genetics, cognitive and affective neuroscience, and psychoimmunology, to name just a few.

As a consequence, increasing numbers of upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in psychology and many of the other social, behavioral, biological, and health sciences are seeking a brief but comprehensive introduction to the field that will inform their own specialized pursuits within psychology and other disciplines. This textbook is intended to provide an integrated and organized foundation for such students. It emphasizes the relationship field's intellectual themes, roots, and milestones; discusses its key constructs and their conceptualizations; describes its methodologies and classic studies; and, most important, presents the theories that have guided relationship scholars and produced the field's major research themes. This text is intended to reflect the fact that relationship science has proved to be an intellectually cohesive and cumulative endeavor, one with vast potential to advance progress in most areas of psychological inquiry as well as many other disciplines.

Although relationship science is multidisciplinary, this text is titled The Psychology of Interpersonal Relationships for a number of reasons: Psychology has been and continues to be a major contributor to the field; psychology is likely to be the major beneficiary of the advancement of relationship science; the authors are psychologists; and, finally, mast relationship courses at present are taught within academic departments of psychology. It is not difficult to foresee that there will someday be departments of relationship science that will bring together scholars from all the contributing disciplines, but such developments must await a loosening of the financial constraints that currently afflict higher education. As a multidisciplinary field, relationship science covers vast terrain and presents a challenge to instructors who generally are themselves interested in only certain subsets of relationship phenomena. By providing the student with a broad and comprehensive foundation in relationship science in the course text, we hoped to free instructors (including ourselves) from the necessity of presenting this foundation in lecture or through supplementary readings, thereby affording them the opportunity to emphasize their own disciplines.

Finally, we should note that although this text assumes that the reader has had an introductory course in psychology, it does not assume a strong background. Many students currently earning degrees in other disciplines have taken only an introductory psychology course (sometimes in the distant past). Students in relationship courses are, we have discovered, nothing if not eclectic. It is not unusual to have students from psychology and sociology alongside those from business, nursing, pharmacy, mortuary science, theater, family practice, social work, and anthropology. We have tried to make relationship science accessible to interested and motivated students in these disciplines as well as to upper-division undergraduates and graduate students in psychology.

NOT for those who are not going into relationship research

I read this book as part of a class taught by one of the authors. I expected it to be a manual on how to have a happy relationship. WRONG! It was 90% about how we are all doomed to get divorced, or at least be unhappy. It has no practical advice for how to have a happy or satisfying relationship. Also, the author boasts about how difficult the text is. I think it is just difficult because it is crammed with hundreds of research studies and it is boring. It IS a difficult read, but also not really relevant to your life unless you are seriously considering graduate school in relationship research.

This review is written from a business school perspective

This is a book about industry structure (think Porter's five forces). The third edition is from 1990, but that is only a slight modification of the 1980 edition. So the book is out of date. When I studied for my first degree I was told that Michael Porter used the material in this book and reversed engineered the findings. In economics and antitrust, perfect competition is ideal. In Porter's world imperfect competition is the ideal, because that makes companies more profitable. The book was written before the field of industrial organization was taken over by the game theoreticians in the 80s. When that takeover happened, many academics stopped doing empirical research. The game theoretic approach has not yielded much benefit for practical use in strategic management so that is really a sad development. The type of industry analysis featured in this book has also gone out of fashion in business school community. If you are interested in where Michael Porter got many of his ideas from, I think this book is very valuable. And even if the examples are out of date, a lot of the material is off course still valid.
