Born into a wealthy family, Trudeau's years among then-Jesuits at Brebeuf College in Montreal were formative, among other reasons for what would become his long-term interaction with Catholicism. Following law school at University of Montreal, Trudeau studied at Harvard in the US, at LSE in London, England, and at Sciences Po in Paris. Mills' considers the biggest influences on Trudeau, including Harold Laski, Jacques Maritain, and Emmanuel Mounier. Mills also recounts Trudeau's travels across the world throughout the 1950s, travelling in Europe, the Near and Far East, Egypt and Sudan, the USSR, Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand, regions in West Africa, Israel, Vietnam, Persia and Taiwan. A chapter considers Trudeau's evolving thought on Federalism and Nationalism, both internationally and in terms of Quebec and Canada. A chapter on Trudeau's moralism highlights his belief that politics requires individuals of conscience, who have the courage to speak frankly about their beliefs.

Mills' biography shows us that understanding Trudeau the thinker is key to understanding Trudeau the politician, whose life was both a practical and a theoretical one. He was a cool political thinker who believed that clear analysis of political questions was essential to good governance.

JAMES L. ROARK (Ph.D., Stanford University) is the Samuel Chandler Dobbs Professor of History at Emory University. He has written and edited four books, including, with Michael P. Johnson, Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South (1984).

MICHAEL P. JOHNSON (Ph.D., Stanford University) is a professor of history at the Johns Hopkins University. He has written or edited six books, including No Chariot Let Down: Charleston’s Free People of Color on the Eve of the Civil War (1984) and Reading the American Past.

PATRICIA CLINE COHEN (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is professor of history at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She has written three books including The Murder of Helen Jewett: The Life and Death of a Prostitute in Nineteenth-Century New York (1998).

A book that mixes the essential along with the non-essential

I am a 3.7 GPA 2nd year University Student and this book was a very mediocre read. I think it mixes too many trivial, non-essential facts along with more important information. Good luck if your professor decides to use tests made available to teachers from the publisher online! My professor gave our class a timed test downloaded from the publisher and most of the students did very poorly even though it was OPEN BOOK! I only did well because I tend to remember trivial facts. For example, one of the questions asked the fraction of Boston's land owned by the richest 5% of Bostonians in 1770! (The answer was 1/2.) Who on earth needs to retain that information! Also, the California Indian tribe named the Chumash appears on one of the publisher's tests. I think the book does a poor job of separating essential from non-essential American history.

The immigrant world Ali chronicles in this penetrating, unsentimental debut has much in common with Zadie Smith's scrappy, multicultural London, though its sheltered protagonist rarely leaves her rundown East End apartment block where she is surrounded by fellow Bangladeshis. After a brief opening section set in East Pakistan-Nazneen's younger sister, the beautiful Hasina, elopes in a love marriage, and the quiet, plain Nazneen is married off to an older man-Ali begins a meticulous exploration of Nazneen's life in London, where her husband has taken her to live. Chanu fancies himself a frustrated intellectual and continually expounds upon the "tragedy of immigration" to his young wife (and anyone else who will listen), while letters from downtrodden Hasina provide a contrast to his idealized memories of Bangladesh. Nazneen, for her part, leads a relatively circumscribed life as a housewife and mother, and her experience of London in the 1980s and '90s is mostly indirect, through her children (rebellious Shahana and meek Bibi) and her variously assimilated neighbors. The realistic complexity of the characters is quietly stunning: Nazneen shrugs off her passivity at just the right moment, and the supporting cast-Chanu, the ineffectual patriarch; Nazneen's defiant and struggling neighbor, Razia (proud wearer of a Union Jack sweatshirt); and Karim, the foolish young Muslim radical with whom Nazneen eventually has an affair-are all richly drawn. By keeping the focus on their perceptions, Ali comments on larger issues of identity and assimilation without drawing undue attention to the fact, even gracefully working in September 11. Carefully observed and assured, the novel is free of pyrotechnics, its power residing in Ali's unsparing scrutiny of its hapless, hopeful protagonists.

Ali's sharp-witted tale explores the immigrant's dilemma of belonging. Nazneen, a young Bangladeshi woman, moves to London's Bangla Town (around the street of the title) in the mid-nineteen-eighties after an arranged marriage with an older man. Seen through Nazneen's eyes, England is at first utterly baffling, but over the seventeen years of the narrative (which takes us into the post-September 11th era), she gradually finds her way, bringing up two daughters and eventually starting an all-female tailoring business. Meanwhile, the more outwardly assertive characters—her comically pompous husband, her rebellious sister back in Bangladesh, and a young Muslim activist with whom Nazneen has an affair—lose their bearings in their various attempts to embrace or reject their heritage. In Ali's subtle narration, Nazneen's mixture of traditionalism and adaptability, of acceptance and restlessness, emerges as a quiet strength.

It's a great story to give you some insight on another woman's ...

I read this book freshman or sophomore year in college, and I remember that while I didn't always understand what the plot was detailing (blame my lack of historical knowledge), I did always root for the main character to come into her own and find her independence and sense of self. The characters, both male and female, that she comes into contact with are memorable, from her husband to the elderly userer to the young activist. It's a great story to give you some insight on another woman's struggle in a different culture and a different land in our time

Painfully depressing - too well written.

I found this book when I was visiting Brick Lane in London. It looked like an interesting neighborhood, so I looked forward to learning more from a novel.

The novel is exquisitely well written. Almost too much so. The heroine's experiences of being pulled from Bangladesh into the slums of London were very painful indeed. The letters from her pretty sister who stayed behind are just as depressing. Reading these stories for chapter after chapter is very hard. The structure of the novel provides minimal break from the pain of their lives.

I found that, at the very least I had to intersperse my reading with more "entertaining" novels. According to my Kindle, I am only 30% in. I don't know if I will be able to finish.

Young woman grows into maturity

While this novel tells the tale of a young woman from Bangaladesh brought to London through an arranged marriage, at some level it could be a story of any woman. Monica Ali's poignant selection of events in the life of the featured character as compared to the story of her sister who continues to live in Bangladesh, could be seen as a commentary on the potentially suffocating life of an Islamic woman in an arranged marriage. But instead, both the featured character's and her sister's transformation through the years of learning to live with a marriage partner and raising young children, into confident, self-aware, mature women has a universal quality. A side benefit in this novel is the introspective description of life in Brick Lane, a street in London known to London residents and tourists for its Indian restaurants.

Calling all bibliophiles, bibliomaniacs, and bibliokleptomaniacs

For quite some time now (more than 20 years) I have classified myself as a bibliophile. In my mind that means I love books...everything about them from reading them to collecting them and in my dreams I like to write them. So it was with great anticipation that I began to read "A Gentle Madness" by Nicholas A. Basbanes.

The title alone is fantastic. I can think of no better way to describe the often illogical mania people like me have for books. We are, I think mad in many ways and yet it is a non-threatening sort of madness. I have been crazy about books since I was a little boy and used to gaze up at my parents crowded book shelves in the living room. And to this day, when I have a couple of minutes to spare, I love to glance over the titles in my own library at home, reminiscing about past reads and anticipating future adventures. A gentle madness indeed.

Mr Basbanes does a fantastic job of cataloguing most of the famous and infamous bibliomaniacs in history. He describes the famous historical collectors as well as modern examples. He discusses what they do and how they do it and somehow is able to get into their psyches and examine why they do it. Of course not all are the same but they all do seem to share the same indescribable love for books. Some collect for the benefit of mankind while others do it for their own bragging rights. I enjoyed reading about the collections that 19th and 20th century collectors put together, fantasizing about what it would be like to be rich enough to build the kind of library they could. But I think I preferred reading about the more common person who put aside other pleasures of life in order to pursue their passion on a more modest basis. I guess I identify more with them. I also enjoyed the story of Stephen Blumberg, known as the most successful book thief of the 20th century. He had stolen more than $20 million dollars worth of books from libraries all over North America before being arrested in Riverside California in the early 1990s. In his mind he was accumulating a collection and preferred to think of the books as on an inter-library loan. This was definitely a gentle madman.

It is a nice reference book. It really gives you an overview of biological corrosion. I was expecting a thicker book, but I guess the information is concise and detailed enough for someone starting to learn the field. It was also the only book that I could find in the area.
