A Specialty Reference for the Meade ETX Series of Telescopes

This book is a specialized text from the Patrick Moore Practical Astronomy Series, and will not be useful unless you either own or have access to a Meade ETX telescope. Having said that, if you do, then you really should not be without it. The first half of the text is devoted to the features, the capabilities, and the limitations of the ETX, and offers a set of solutions to some of the issues that arise when first exposed to Meade's curious piece of engineering. Keep in mind that this book as actaully adapted from Weasner's "Mighty ETX" website, and so if you own an ETX and are looking for something new in this book that wasn't on his website, you'll probably be disappointed. However, as one who generally prefers print over screens, I am pleased to have acquired this text.

I would love a good ETX book - but this is not it

I wanted to like this book, but unfortunately it's not worth the paper it's printed on. There is more and better information available free on Mike Weasner's terrific website (referenced on almost every page of the book). Nor does the book provide a valuable and handy reference - the long text articles about tuning the scope etc lack diagrams, illustrations, useful pictures... I almost laughed when the Seasonal Name Star Charts appeared several to a page and so small as to be utterly useless. Want to know how to carry your ETX outside? This book is for you. Want to know anything about accessories, programming the AutoStar, what the inside of the ETX looks like, CCD imaging, or similar topics? Forget it, it's not in there. Conclusion: If you want a good astronomy book, consider "The Backyard Astronomer's Guide" or "NightWatch". If you want ETX-specific information, visit Mike Weasner's website. And save your money until a useful ETX book is published - there is a need for one, but unfortunately this is not it.

Mike Weasner -- the Champion of ETX owners

This eagerly awaited book has finally arrived! Best of all, it is specifically directed to those of us who own and you use one of the Meade ETX scopes. It is an essential tool/accessory for anyone who uses an ETX to view the universe, and I'm sure others will no doubt find it helpful, as well. For those of us familiar with Mr. Weasner's site on the Internet, we all know that it is an invaluable source of information for any amateur astronomer, regardless of level of experience or equipment used. There is something for everyone, from the very first-time night sky watcher, to the novice beginner or the advanced user of the most complex and expensive gear available. As many times as I will return to that web site, now I have a handy, well organized, clearly written and equally useful compendium of information that I can carry with me and read anywhere at all (without having to download page after page and print, to bring with me in the field, or elsewhere). Great features are the wonderfully organized table of contents and useful index to quickly locate the kinds of things I want to know while using the book as a reference, whether away from the scope, or actually out observing the stars and celestial bodies, etc. The book is a "fast read" if you choose to 'devour' it that way (I did!) Thanks Mike!!!

Great reading

A terrific thriller, Ludlum in top form. This is back in the days when his intricate plots made sense and fit like a glove. He also kept the page count down in this one, never padding the book, and never veering into unnecessary sidetracks (like ICARUS AGENDA's 100+ page prologue!)
I can't see a thriller fan not loving this book, nor failing to appreciate the brilliant device Ludlum uses to get the action going. If you've never read Ludlum, this is a great place to start.

The best by the best

The Chancellor Manuscript by Robert Ludlum is a first rate book by the number one Thriller writer in my opinion. Buy it, I believe you will enjoy it.
The plot is about a famous writer, Peter Chancellor, who has been given the task of writing a novel by a group called the Inver Brass, a sinister group with an ulterior motive of finding out who among them is a traitor. The topic of the novel must be the assassination of J. Edger Hoover. When the author comes too close to exposing the existence and identities of the group and its members they try to discredit him and his work. They try to drive him crazy by turning everything he writes as fiction into reality. Not only that but the villains that he has created are actually trying to kill him. Meanwhile the Inver Brass are trying to convince him he is delusional.
It is the reader in the end who must decide what is fiction and what is real as the novel works its way through twists and turns in the wonderful way only a Ludlum novel can produce. It the end all comes together rather nicely.
His characters are as usual, both realistic and developed. The writing is superb. The suspense nail biting. It is simply the best by the best.

Robert Ludlum -- Master of the Espionage Novel

I am hooked on Robert Ludlum's books. I gave up romance after I turned 20, moved on to murder mysteries (Ellery Queen genre), but I never experienced an author that could keep me awake until 3:00 in the morning, not only with this book--but with all of them!
I have read The Chancellor Manuscripts, all three of the series of the Bourne books, and just finished the Holcroft Covenant, which teases and hints at a sequel in the last few pages, and I'm crossing my fingers there is one (have to still check out his list of books).
The twist, as expected in any Ludlum novel, occurs about half-way through the book, from a direction the reader would never guess, and involves a woman (the hero always has to get his gal in Ludlum's novels!), and this right after he experiences something that forces him to run for his life, hide from those he loves, and/or forces him to cut his communications from any normal life that the hero would normally use if this was real life.
While Ludlum's books smack of a 'formula,' I'm hooked--you know that something unusual is going to happen to the main character, he's going to be forced to give up his normal life to go out and 'save the world,' he'll use life-long aquaintances for help throughout the book (although about 85% end up in a morgue by the end of the story), there's lots of shooting of the bad guys, a damsel in distress who will initially hate or distrust the main character, then fall in love with him, and after which everybody shoots at each other and more bad and good guys die, then the hero either ends up being 'savior' of the world, or he ends up chopped to pieces (ouch), but survives to take on the bad guys again.
Don't try this plot at home--only Ludlum can add enough realistic and believable imagery to convince you of the reality of the story with his details. I was surprised that this is the only book of Ludlum's so far to have the scenery completely fall within the continental USA versus his European settings for all his other books. While the details are pretty amibiguous in this book, they are realistic enough to give you a feel for the location (versus his precise details and descriptions of European sites in his other novels).
If you haven't tried a Ludlum novel, pick one up--any one, and enjoy an espionage thriller that only a master like Ludlum can write.

RANDY J. NELSON holds the Brumbauch Chair in Brain Research and Teaching at The Ohio State University Medical Center, USA. He is professor and Chair of the Department of Neuroscience and a member of the Institute for Behavioral Medicine at The Ohio State University Medical Center. He also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Psychology and Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology at Ohio State University. Dr. Nelson earned his A.B. degree in Psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, and began his graduate career with work on canine behavioral sex differentiation under Dr. Frank Beach. After receiving his M.A. in Psychology, he began focusing on circadian rhythms and photoperiodism with Dr. Irving Zucker. He earned a Ph.D. in Psychology and a Ph.D. in Endocrinology from the University of California at Berkeley, then went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in reproductive physiology with Drs. Frank Bronson and Claude Desjardins at the Institute for Reproductive Biology at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Nelson served on the faculty at The Johns Hopkins University for fifteen years before moving to Columbus. He has published over 300 research articles and several books describing studies in seasonality, behavioural endocrinology, biological rhythms, immune function, sex behaviour, and aggressive behaviours.

Comprehensive and engaging book about sex behavior

This book is one of the most informative books about the basic mechanisms underlying sex behavior and sex differences. Forget about Venus and Mars. This book really gets to the basics in a readible and enjoyable fashion. You don't need much biological training to learn a lot from this book (in fact, I skipped Chapter 2 which was a rather dense treatment of hormones, but is a good resource to consult) and didn't have any trouble in later chapters. Learn about how sex differences in behavior arise, and learn about the many ways that hormones have subtle effects on our behavior...

Quite simply, this is the best textbook on hormones and behavior available today. The text is clearly written and enjoyable as well, a rarity in academic textbooks. A must-buy for anyone interested in the the interaction of hormones and behavior.

A Text Book, Really!

This is a true text book. It takes a very diffuicult subject matter and tries to help the reader learn about a topic that can be overwhelming. The book is well written, with good, real-world examples, but it still has very detailed information. Read it if you want to learn more about the endocrine system, and its hormones.
