Astronomy questions and definitions in a Biblical perspectiv

As a scientist who is also a Christian, I have found it unfortunately difficult to find literature that appropriately deals with scientific facts from a biblical viewpoint. This book is a prime example of what I wish I could find in other scientific fields (including my own). The book deals with a number of current and relevant scientific issues (astronomy, meterological) and gave a balanced biblical perspective. The author of the book was willing to delve into some difficult issues and give a response that was reasonable and concise.
Donald DeYoung does not hold back from challenging some Christian thought that delves more on superstition and rumor than on facts. I was both intellectually challenged and encouraged to search scripture for truth revolving around the gospel. In my perspective, this book is a rare find in its readability and scientific basis. It would be a terrific study tool for teenagers college students in Christian schools and for those who are mere laymen in the field of Astronomy.

Astronomy and the Bible: Disclosing the Glory of God in Creation

We are often exposed to "scientific" articles, books and television programs that ignore and even mock the Bible's clear teaching concerning the Creator. Because of this, Christians are sometimes intimidated, especially in a culture which insists that science is the sole propriety of secular humanism; but if the study of Physics, Biology and Astronomy should do anything to the Christian, it should inccrease our own sense of wonder and awe for the One who simply spoke the vast cosmos into existence by His powerful Word (Hebrews 11:3, Psalm 33:6). Instead of avoiding these subjects, Christians must understand that genuine science is the propriety of God, and is therefore to be enjoyed by His children, both for personal edification, as well as for outreach and evangelism to the lost. With this in mind, there is a great need for scientific works that can be used by brethren in order to increase their understanding of the sciences in an age of scholastic misinformation.

One such book is Astronomy and the Bible, Questions & Answers, by Dr. Donald B. DeYoung.

Dr. DeYoung is Chairman of the Department of Physical Science at Grace College, Winona Lake, Indiana. He holds a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics, as well as an M. Div. from Grace Seminary. DeYoung's approach to the subject of Astronomy is clearly Biblical. Refreshingly, he deals with many of the sticky questions that normally surround modern cosmology, but with the priority of Biblical authority. Within the brief span of just 176 pages, DeYoung manages to raise and answer one hundred popular questions dealing with Cosmology and Physics. In particular, he addresses the most common questions dealing with:

* Geocentricity (Is the earth at the center of the universe?).

* The Anthropic Principle (a term which speaks of the uniqueness of earth's habitable environment).

* What is the big bang?

* What is the age of the universe?

* Should man be in space?

* What is background radiation?

* What's wrong with studying astrology?

This small sample of his one hundred questions provides a preview of DeYoung's very helpful review of Cosmology and Physics. Many of the questions that he raises are designed to bust certain modern myths. Others are designed to clarify matters that are often misunderstood in the popular culture. I find that his simple answers are thorough enough, and yet simple enough, to equip believers for personal edification as well as for sharing the Gospel with others. You don't need a Physics degree in order to read and understand this book! At the same time, this work will certainly challenge your thinking about many discussions that have fallen prey to secular humanism. I offer it to you with my highest recommendation.

Great Homeschooling Resource for Parents of Public Schools

Having attended public schools, I learned everything from an evolutionary perspective. We homeschool, and in teaching our children creationist science, I wanted a foundation of knowledge. One thing I really like about this book is the ease of reading. The author does a great job of teaching and explaining in this book through question and answer format.
I also appreciate the author's honesty that science cannot explain everything. The following quote, while lengthy, really shows the tone of this book and the author's heart:
"Science alone will never have final answers regarding the true origin and purpose of the solar system. Only in Christ the Creator 'are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge . . . ' (Col. 2:3). This does not mean that we must abandon our search for scientific knowledge. It does mean that we must maintain a posture of reverence and spiritual humility in this search. After all, this is God's universe, and it reflects his attributes of perfect power, wisdom, and love."
I have not only received a foundation of knowledge, but been led to consider our Creator with awe and wonder.

Scott somehow manages to write a very punchy and catchy book that doesn't feel like you're reading a book

I have a confession to make: This is my very first review on Amazon.com.

Scott has written a very touching book. It radiates authenticity and experience and has very VERY practical and real advice for networking I haven't seen anywhere else in the world.

But what really ties this book together is the writing style. Scott somehow manages to write a very punchy and catchy book that doesn't feel like you're reading a book. It's more like sitting down with Scott and talking to him 1 on 1. This style is VERY difficult, especially in a non-fiction book about a traditionally dry topic: networking. I don't want to sound too hype-y and say he's a blend of Hemingway and Tim Ferriss, but he is a damn fine writer.

This book isn't about networking, either. It's about connections (hence the name). Scott is a living, breathing example of courage and authenticity. You won't want to put this book down- buy it now!

Solid, solid approach to building a network from the ground up

When I was 22 and entering the "real world" I interviewed a bunch of my charismatic friends asking them, "how the hell do I build a network?" I got answers that ran the spectrum from "well, once someone does you a small favor, ask for a bigger one" (aka the Benjamin Franklin effect), to "take interest in people and make them laugh" (good advice for being charismatic) to "proactively provide value for others" (the best possible networking advice).

What I never found was a guide on how to build a network of people who I can help who would also be willing to help me. While the approach in Connections that Count isn't the only possible approach to building a great network from scratch, it is by far the best one that I've come across in about a decade of actively studying (and doing) network building. The approach the author advocates is bold, but holy hell is effective.

Good information, but misleading title

If you are looking for a complete "how to" to host a lunch or dinner that brings people together and establishes new connections, then this is the book for you. I found it very comprehensive and the inclusion of email templates would be very helpful if you were to employ the author's strategy.

However, I'm only giving it 4 stars because the title is misleading. I was expecting a book about making connections generally, not a specific technique for making connections. The inclusion of an introduction or preface explaining the concept would be really helpful for those of us new to this concept.

Best textbok I have had in my MBA program!

This book is great. I have never seen a finance or accounting book that so plainly explains different concepts. I have had 700 level accounting and finance and then took a healthcare finance course. This book finally made a lot of the information I had learned in the previous 2 courses make sense. I would highly recommend this for any healthcare finance program. And if you just want to learn more about this, it's a book that you can teach yourself from. I actually enjoyed sitting down to read this book. Read the whole thing in my 7-week course. Highly recommend, I wish more textbook writers had this style!

It's an excellent book, thank goodness I had a prior background as a local government department administrator and am married to an accountant. The author walks the reader through the concepts and builds on the prior chapters. Chapter 11 and 12 bring it all together so if you struggled in the chapters leading up to the final ones your going to be doing a lot of searching prior chapters figure out the problems. The book is a good read with the exception of one chapter which my wife commented on that the author was trying to fit an entire semester of accounting 101 into a single chapter. She helped me considerably with that one and then it all made sense. If you have the basics down this text will put it all in perspective.

Among the many topics treated are: forces in the skeletal system; fluid flow, with examples from the circulatory system; the logistic equation; scaling; transport of neutral particles by diffusion and by solvent drag; membranes and osmosis; equipartition of energy in statistical mechanics; the chemical potential and free energy; biological magnetic fields; membranes and gated channels in membranes; linear and nonlinear feedback systems; nonlinear phenomena, including biological clocks and chaotic behavior; signal analysis, noise and stochastic resonance detection of weak signals; image formation and description; image reconstruction; hearing and medical ultrasound; atoms and light; near infrared scattering; optical coherence tomography; infrared radiation; ultraviolet light; radiometry and photometry; the interaction of photons and charged particles in tissue; radiological physics and the use of x-rays in diagnosis and therapy; nuclear medicine; and magnetic resonance imaging. Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology (Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering) is now in its fourth edition, and gets better every time. This is the ideal starting place for biologists who need to use physics to explain something biological or physiological, or physicists who want to apply quantitative physics theories or techniques to biological phenomena or delve into medical or biological physics. The derivations and illustrations are clear and useful, and the book provides detailed explanations rather than just decreeing the applicable equation for a particular phenomenon. The rich set of problems makes it an ideal textbook for physics or biomedical engineering or quantitative biology; the breadth of the material makes it a wonderful reference book.

Intermediate Physics for Medicine and Biology, 4th Edition (Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering) has proven to be a most useful tool in crossing the lines between physics and biology. As a recent graduate of Medical Physics now doing a postdoc with MD's, I find myself reaching for some section of it time and time again; both to help me understand their perspective as well as to better communicate mine. It is not only a must have, it is a MUST KEEP!

A Great Textbook for Medical Physics

This is an ideal textbook for an introductory level medical physics/biomedical engineering course for juniors and seniors. When I used this textbook to teach an introductory level medical physics class, I found it to be rich in biological and medical materials, and hardly referred my students to other textbooks. It includes most of the derivations that students need to know and plenty of problems for them. The authors have done a great service for the students by explaining required physics concepts in the textbook.
