Glorifying, Healing, Refreshing

Charlotte Stemple's new work, My Vietnam, provides a God-glorifying, heart-healing, spirit-refreshing view of the spiritual battle that was being waged and won as the physical and political war devastated the nation of Vietnam. This was a battle for the hearts of individuals and the triumph of Christ's Gospel even amid the battle of nations. With her characteristic candor, insight and humor Charlotte weaves into one tapestry the ecstasies and agonies that those war years held for so many. The legacy of Christ's servants--missionaries, some U.S. servicemen, national pastors and believers--is one of love, sacrifice and faithfulness. The book closes with the wonderful news of the thriving, multiplying life of Christ's church after the fall of the South to the communist north. That relatively tiny national church has flourished and grown under the darkness of oppression and proven once again that Christ will build His Church and the enemy's gates will not prevail against it. Most Americans only have two views of Vietnam during the 1960's and 70's. One of unbelievable violence of the American War Machine with bombs and dying American boys. Or one of great protest from a growing discontent among the American populace over the war. Mrs Stemple gives a completely different view of what was going on inside Vietnam. A view of the struggle going on from the eyes of the Vietnamese people and Missionaries who worked among them. For over 100 years Alliance Missionaries have lived and died in service of God bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to people living in South East Asia. This book allows us to go with and experience a little of the Joy's and Sorrow's of living in Vietnam during war time sowing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the lives and ministry of servants faithful to God's call. This book is a great read and should be read by everyone of God's Children serious about taking the Gospel to lost men and women the world over. This book talks about the sowing time which has produced the Great Harvest that is now going on among the Vietnamese people.

Down-homey and Understandable

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, partly because I know the author and partly because, after living inSoutheast Asian myself, it was written in such a down-homey, understandable way that I could totally identify. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the Vietnam War and anyone interested in missions.

Don't buy it. It was the first book I bought in my endevours to learn this language, and it had me squirming right from the first page. Every unit introduces word upon word with no entry in the glossary. Gramatical concepts are used in the examples and exercises which are not dealt with until 4 or 5 chapters later. The exercises are only half revealed in the keys at the end of the book. The gramatical rules are only half explained. I don't understand how anyone could spend all that time to write a text book and get it so wrong! In short: BLEAGH!!!!

Badly organized

This book lacks a thorough description of grammar, choosing to selectively omit concepts when the author fiunds it too difficult to tackle. The reader is them left to figure out those concepts by himself because they were too hard to explain -- go figure! The book is also using words not explained in the glossary, and the exercises need words that have not been introduced. The CD does not cover all dialogues. The book does not have a comprehensive overview of declensions or conjugations in the running text, and I was missing a place to find declensions of pronouns etc.

Benson's Microbiological Lab Manual

I purchased this book for my Microbiology class that I am taking this year at my private university. It was shipped and came the next day thanks to Amazon Prime, and it came just as it was marketed. This is a great textbook for base level Microbiology lab manuals and I would recommend this to anyone in need of this textbook, (at least for me it was much cheaper here).

CD Does Not Come with Book

Some people have suggested, just get the CD, save your money and don't buy the book. I was able to buy the book and will always be a "book" not an e-book person; personally I loved the book and never got around to the CD. I provide this information for those wishing to save a few $$$. Others have reviewed the contents of the CD; my purpose is to tell you how to buy the CD. If I get negative reviews for telling people how to save a few $$, I will have to believe it's the publishers who did it.

The CD did not come with the book when ordering new from Amazon. There is an offer on the back of the book to buy the CD separately if it did not come with the text (only professors can order the book bundled with the CD-ROM); normally the CD is available only separately. ISBN for the CD is 0495505595 in case you only want the CD. It's $17.99. Otherwise, the book comes with an access code that is supposed to link online to the same content that is on the CD. The publisher also invites you to purchase the online content separately ("for a small fee") if you buy a used book.

Just Great

Hurley’s logic is simply the best first-order logic book I have encounter, to date. Potential buyers should definitely get the tenth edition onward, or at least the ninth edition, otherwise, the book is quite different and the formatting, for one, is considerably poorer. Not only is the arrangement of the book aesthetically appealing and easy to work with, the formatting makes for easy learning. I did have an outstanding professor, when I took my logic course, but I definitely believe this book could be used without an instructor. About a year later, after having read the book, I used it again for preparation for a metalogic course, and it worked for me just as well as when I had the first time, with an instructor.

The book covers pretty much everything I have seen covered in an undergraduate first-order logic course. The book begins with informal fallacies, works through a great deal of syllogistic and medieval logic, and moves on up to natural deduction, and so on. The book, I think, tries to adhere to a chronology of development of logic, as it was in history, but, where efficacious, Hurley has placed the most pertinent ideas together for maximized umph. The problems help the reader develop simpler skills first, before moving on to harder ones in that section. In this respect, the book is very well organized, each problem eliciting for one more new skill, once the previous one has been answered. At least half of the answers are in the back of the book, so, again, and instructor is not absolutely necessary. This book, also, does not take long to go through, which is a feat for a technical book of this kind. An adept, with some dedication, can make it through this book in a month’s time, I believe, and I feel that most students of average intelligence will be able to assimilate the vast majority of its content in four months’ time (i.e., a semester’s study).

Recommended to all, and I think any high-schooler (or anyone familiar with the abstract concept of a “variable,” perhaps middle-schoolers) upward would find tremendous value in this text. If you choose to read one book on logic, I think this would be the one I recommend.
