Author and cartoonist Art Roche has more than 20 years of experience in cartooning, illustration and entertainment development. He is currently the creative director for Smart Bomb Interactive, a game development company in Utah. Prior to that, he was the creative director for Cartoon Network's new media department and managed all of the entertainment content for websites, online video and mobile platforms. In 2008, Art created the animated series, Nacho Bear for Cartoon Network.

GREAT BLEND OF INSTRUCTION AND INSPIRATION

This is unlike any other cartooning book past or present. Too many cooks of this genre show you the standard "draw an oval and a triangle and now you have a duck!" or "draw like I do!" instructions. Art Roche's book teaches kids to think, to imagine, to be funny. Art gives readers the tools to pursue their styles, not his. It's an easy read, full of great illustrations, and humorous examples. Art Roche makes anyone from from 4 to 84 want to pick up a pencil and have fun! Great gift for any kid or kid at heart.

Sharpen those pencils

My 12-year-old picked up this book and devoured it in one sitting, reporting it helped him conquer some of the problems he had encountered as a recreational cartoonist. He especially enjoyed the section devoted to writing.

This is a gorgeous book - hardcover with color on every page. Great art, lively text, and very inspiring - it works as both a "how-to" and personal cartooning cheerleader.

In this workshop MK holds up Alekz as the foremost of his Knowledge Seekers, the only one so far to have understood what he was talking about and interpreted that into hardware – easily assembled in anybody’s kitchen, small cells constructed in a few minutes, and then strung together with nano coated copper wire in such a way that he has been supplying not only his own house but the whole street with power, and also he has not put any fuel into his car since March 2015 – coming up to 6 months as of this writing on September 6, 2015…

In this workshop MK holds up Alekz as the foremost of his Knowledge Seekers, the only one so far to have understood what he was talking about and interpreted that into hardware – easily assembled in anybody’s kitchen, small cells constructed in a few minutes, and then strung together with nano coated copper wire in such a way that he has been supplying not only his own house but the whole street with power, and also he has not put any fuel into his car since March 2015 – coming up to 6 months as of this writing in September 2015… As of this re-edit in February 2016 the process has continued and the cells have now been refined into split capacitor/batteries to power the Magrav units and the spaceships now being built – but it is still a fascinating thing to go back over the 68th workshop and appreciate the organic nature of the process.

A huge collection

What the Grimm Brothers did for fairy tales in Germany, Afanas'ev did for Russia. Over the course of his lifetime(1826-1871), he collected countless of these wonderful little stories from common folk, just as the Grimms did. This collection contains stories of adventure and enchantment, animal fables and more. Included are stories of Vasilissa and Baba Yaga, the witch whose house was built on chicken feet, and the famous story of the giant turnip. There's even some stories about vampires. But be prepared, this book is huge! And every bit of it distinctly Russian.

Ian Myles Slater on: Classic Tales, Enduring Translation

I have owned since 1975 a copy of an earlier, hardcover, Pantheon reprint edition of this superb collection, which was originally published in 1945. I have used it for both light reading and for serious study (while in courses on Baltic and Slavic Folklore and Folktale Studies). The selection and translation of stories both seem first-rate. (For the latter, I have had to rely on the opinions of those who actually read Russian, instead of just having studied it in school.) The accompanying illustrations are properly enchanting -- and only occasionally are placed where they give away the point of the story.

The only real drawback is that it is still merely a selection from about three volumes (depending on the edition you prefer) of "skazki." This is the Russian term for oral tales of marvels, adventures, and misadventures, equivalent to the German "Maerchen." In both cases, the English term "Fairy Tale" is the conventional, but not really adequate, translation. (As usual in large collections, only a handful of tales concern anything like fairies.) One of the requirements for the selection seems to have been that the tales chosen should be acceptable to American parents in the 1940s, but otherwise the considerable variety of the original seems to have been largely preserved. The suggested reader age of "9 to 12" conceals the pleasure that adult readers with interests in folklore or Russian culture will derive from the volume. Fortunately, they may be lead to it by the fine supplementary material at the end, although this is now half a century old.

Afanas'ev (various transliterations) was one of the many nineteenth-century collectors inspired by the Grimms,. By most accounts he was one of the most responsible, even though his practices of recording and documenting texts are hardly up to modern standards. (Neither were those of the Grimms, for that matter.) The main collection from which this was excerpted was the sourcebook for Vladimir Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale," a key work in modern folktale studies, but as Roman Jakobson (yes, the Structural Linguist) points out in his commentary to this collection, the book had already established itself as a gem of Russian literature, an inspiration and resource for poets.

What a fun book!

Fairy tales get us into the psyche of a culture. Americans see themselves as Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appelseed, conquoring the frontier. This book introduces us to the Russian psyche. It shows us how they look at things--the world, society, life, family, and government.
Some of the stroies are charming, such as the fabel of the Turnip and the Honey-pot. Other stories made absolutley no sense. But I had fun trying to crack these weird nuts.
I enjoyed the translation. It is not as energetic as Seamus Heaney, or J. B. Phillipws, but it is readable, athough you realize that you are reading a translation.
C. S. Lewis, in his preface to "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," mentions that as children we read fairy tales, then we outgow them. Then, as adults, we come back to these stories and read them with different eyes. I had that experince with this book.

About the Author
STEVEN M. BRAGG, CPA, has been the chief financial officer or controller of four companies, as well as a consulting manager at Ernst & Young and auditor at Deloitte & Touche. Fast Close

Great book. I read it from cover to cover, took notes and then gave it to the Controller of our company to implement. We went from an 11 working day close to a 5 working day close. This book is filled with simple tips that you forget over time.

From Senior Accountant to Controller

From the Senior Accountant to the Controller, this book is an excellent guide to closing the financial statements. This book is a great read with in depth concepts, but is easy to understand. The bulk of the chapters revolve around inventory and manufacturing accounting. I read the book at the request of the company I previously worked for. Our CFO encourage each Senior Accountant to read it and work on improving the company's closing process. Within a few short months, the company went from a very soft close, to a firm close with accurate accruals and included financial analysis with fluctuation reporting. This books helped me take ownership of the financial statements I was releasing to the department vice presidents, company presidents, and banks. This book gave me the confidence in the statements released.

I did not read the edition above, but was unable to find edition 1 with the blue cover.

Great book, bit misleading title

I have purchased a whole bunch of books by Steven M Bragg, and I am also a committed listener of his podcast.

This book is yet another great book by Steven, except that the title is bit misleading, as it is more about how the company can stay productive instead of 'fast close'.

The point of the book is to be able to apply procedures in real life situations - while noone's expecting to accomplish that within a short time period, with the book bearing such a title of 'fast close' with a hand holding a time clock in the background, I was excited to learn real life procedures that applies to our company.

Instead, the book goes over some general guidelines as to how the company should set up their accounting systems. For instance, it talks about how the multi-division company should implement an uniform accounting system so that parent & its subsidiaries can use same accounting system, which will make it easier for fast close.

While it is certainly true, such a general tip isn't something you can really implement for 'fast close'. The book also greatly talks about other general guidelines such as measuring the inventory at its lower of cost of market. (LCM) It recommends negotiating a new contract with supplier to pay for goods once they are 'sold',in order to reduce the inventory count. All these points are more of 'company wish list', not so much related to 'fast close'(sure, uniformized accounting system and proper measure of inventory valuation can contribute the fast close - these are all done at 'corporate' level, something most controllers do not have control over)

Overall, i feel that the books is too general and should be used for better accounting practices more than anything else.
(Example of the tips being too general: reduce employee time clock error by implementing online system, link your software to additional software, etc)

With these facts aside, it still is a great read and Steven has done a wonderful job in explaining a complex accounting strategies into easy to read, plain English format.

I would still recommend this book for anyone who's interested in staying more productive, but this book would serve more as general tips & recommendations

Mourning the demise of "real" travel that is no longer "heroic or individualizing," Leed ( No Man's Land , LJ 5/15/79) is saddened at the ease with which modern travelers move around the globe, taking no risks and facing no unknowns. His study centers around the premise that prior to the breakdown of global barriers, travel was not only movement from place to place but a transforming event filled with historical and psychological significance. He supports his ideas with examples from epic literature (Gilgamesh and Odysseus), medieval tales of wandering knights, and travel journals of explorers and adventurers. These travel experiences are examined from a theoretical psychological perspective which analyzes the stages of a journey and the relationship between travel and identity. This is a demanding, scholarly work which presumes a knowledge of literature, history, and psychology. Recommended only for graduate school collections.

Philosophy and psychology of travel in history

In this original and very interesting essay, the Author explores what it meant to travel in ancient times, in the middle ages and in modern era. his notations are very profound, whether he considers the myths of Gilgamesh and Ulysses, the knights errand legends and the modern era explorations. Alas, the mass tourism of today has stripped away the sense of wonder for many, but the realtraveller will always be thrilled by a new experience, a place he's never been. A must read for the considerate travellers of today!

great on the mind of the traveler, but trails off

This is an amazing book in several ways. Leed really enters into the mind of the traveler, giving a detailed -- and often striking -- account of what it means to depart, to be in transit, and to arrive. Any one who ever traveled, all of us iow, will learn from these observations, indeed we will be stunned that we never noticed what traveling actually means.

The remainder of the book is less exciting, if still good. Leed gives an account of the role which traveling and travelers have played in history. It's a central role, he argues, indeed journeys through space turn out to be the central mechanism through which most social entities have come to be shaped. Reaching this conclusion, something has clearly gone wrong with the argument. Briefly, Leed overreaches. He tries to explain too much with too little. It becomes too much of a "brief introduction to Western (and Eastern etc) civilization." While it is intelligent and learned enough, the argument is not new and it is not particularly convincing.

All in all, an exciting read, which would have made a phenomenally good book if the author had stayed with the initial insights and gone on to deepen them further.

About the Author

Shihan Pervez B. Mistry has taught martial arts since 1964, when he was not much more than a student himself. He holds a fourth-degree black belt in judo and a hachi-dan (eighth-degree) black belt in Goju-ryu karate. He is also a certified personal trainer and post-rehabilitative sports injury specialist.

Shihan Mistry’s teaching career spans fifty years. Of the tens of thousands of students who have passed through his doors, many have become respected teachers in their own right. He has trained members of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the Border Security Force, the Central Reserve Police Force, the Naval Commandos, the Dogra Battalion of the Indian Army, and the Black Cat Commandos, among other military and law enforcement organizations.

Today, Shihan Mistry and his wife live in Mumbai, India, where he is committed to empowering Indian women and travels the country to teach self-defense seminars to women from all walks of life.

If you are looking for a reference and comprehensive look and study into the important kata known as Sanchin in the Martial Arts, look no further. The author Sensei Pervez B. Mistry has devoted his life to the training of traditional Goju Ryu Karate along with the physiology of the human body and blends these two aspects here in this work to allow the reader to create connections between mind and body that will help create a deeper understanding of how to perform Sanchin kata, but also to understand the why of its existence and the reason it is practiced for strengthening and fortifying the body, mind, and spirit. The book itself is well written and allows the reader to be immersed in the philosophy of Sanchin while at the same time keeping things fresh and interesting. If you are looking to gain more understanding on Sanchin and also looking for a book that is also well written and keeps your interest throughout, please do yourself a favor and by this book, you will not be disappointed!

I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING IOGKF KARATE UNDER SHIHAN MISTRY FOR THE LAST 35 TO 40 YEARS. Paul Zubulake and Sang Lee have written an excellent introduction to the High Frequency world. They take the reader through the birth and growth of high frquency trading and present the key elements of HFT and their impact on the markets.The authors leverage informational surveys with key participants to present factually based insights that are very informative. HFT will be a key component of market sturcture for a very long time and this book allows the reader to form a more complete understanding of its processes and its impact.

Very dry assembly of random information about HFT

Unfortunately, this book did not live up to my expectations. The authors seemingly cover a lot of ground do not manage to tell much substantial about HFT. The book is very dry and different chapters are only loosely related to each other. The emphasis of the book is on providing very dry technical descriptions of very technology systems employed by various HFT firms.

I was hoping to learn more about strategies, market micro structure or the type of techniques used to develop strategies. All of these topics received very limited attention.

The authors do give a somewhat satisfactory historic overview, summarize current trends and shed light on possible regulatory challenges in the future.

Last chapter is not related to the topic of the book.

Sandeep Gupta -- as befits the popular image of a writer -- has held a variety of jobs, the most recent being the ghost blogger for a multinational bank's vice president. He lives in Amsterdam, studies and practices tai chi for stress relief, and as a budding novelist, is trying to goad his procrastinating publisher into getting his first novel printed and distributed.

While pondering the direction his life should take--corporate drone or starving artist--he returns to India to renew his work visa, meets a very interesting woman named Shruti, heeds his tai chi teacher's words of wisdom, impersonates his friend Pritam Mitra at a business conference, and falls in love.

HMH Bank employee Simon van der Wiel provides a cyber-narrative in his Simple Simon blog of the goings-on during Sandeep's imposture of his friend. Sandeep-as-Pritam improvises a presentation based on the Bhagavad Gita at the conference and finds himself on the rise as an innovative thinker on economics. As if that weren't enough, Sandeep acquires a cyber-stalker.

Sandeep is a very busy man.

The bons mots fly thick and fast through the pages of this contemporary novel, which pokes loving fun at corporate culture, techno-gadgets in daily life, romance, traditional Indian customs, geekdom, and a handful of other themes. The wonder of it all is that Sengupta keeps all the threads interwoven in a densely attractive word tapestry which is also very, very funny. Logophiles will be snickering at all the literary in-jokes as well as the pop-culture references.

At 681 pages, The Best Seller is certainly a hefty tome, but the book's size should in no way intimidate the interested reader. Sengupta has delivered a finely tempered blade of a book that takes artful slices at several pretentious elements of modern life. In its scope and length, it's reminiscent of Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, another excellent novel. The Best Seller deserves the attention to match its title. --ForeWord Clarion Review

philosophy, love and psychology

Yet another masterpiece by a young and talented author.
Set in Amsterdam and spanning across the continents to California and India , the novel reveals the brilliant command the author has on the English language, martial arts , the economy as well as the great Hindu philosophical text- the Geeta.
He manages to weave the skeins of these individual entities into a rich tapestry, shimmering with his own wicked sense of humor apparent in every page.
Though a weighty book,the narrative is never boring and conveyed through seamless transition between prose,delightful repartee, mails and Simons blog.
The darker undercurrents deal with being a struggling author and trying not to compromise ethics while being sucked into the vortex of rejection slips.

People working in the IT industry will identify with the all too familiar shenanigans of everyday corporate life.
The erotomania of Amrita, the simple philosophy of Simon as well as rotund intrusiveness of manager Madhu with her self proclaimed knowledge of psychiatry is entertaining.
These are interspersed with philosphical discussions with the real psychiatrist Dr Roy and his analysis of people and their personalities, these compelling conversations often being held in interesting locations.
The reverence that the author and by extension Sandeep the protagonist, has for the "Professor" is apparent in the exchanges with him over the telephone as well as in person.

Running through the core is the stimulating banter between Sandeep and spirited Shruti while their love blossoms over text messages and haikus. Every encounter is a pun-filled paradise peppered with playfulness and is a treat to savor.

Finally we have the authors own interpretation of the financial crisis as well as his own innovative solution.

A thoughtful and thought-provoking tome, refreshingly written and a riveting read.

A fresh breath of air

This book is like a morning star alone and ungrouped, amidst a milieu of stars and asteroids in the literary firmament, shimmering in ancient wisdom and philosophy of life and emphasising the ways and nuances of interpreting our own lives and making our own choices as we go along. It also makes a case for understanding the subtle distinction between truth-like and the Truth and carefully choosing the latter.

Seldom has any author attempted to reconcile the complex ambitions of human minds by putting on conference a psychiatrist, a political science student, an information technology worker, a young multi-faceted hero who expresses his love both through Shakespearean drama and Tai-Chi rigour and finally an aging saintly professor who passes to his protégés his unbounded faith and erudition from ancient Indian canons viz. the Gita, the Upanishads and the Mahabharata. Also what is interesting are the multi-cultural discussions around the self-contradicting India and the self- introspective
Dutchland.

The presentation style is contemporary and unique through the usage of chat transcripts and blogs which are the modern mantra of corporate and social networking. Every page of this book has got a thrill, many wonderful alliterations and expressions of humour, mostly leaning on sarcasm whose poignancy leaves our mind badly bruised and scarred... and makes us reflect those very shades on our own personal lives. Makes us feel like a journey ... a real one towards truth.

Choosing characters, from the sphere of Information Technology, who are working in large global corporations with vaunted identities, makes it a very interesting read for the real IT professionals. This book is highly recommended for all multi-national knowledge workers at varying echelons of the corporate ladder who wish to take a fresh perspective of their lives and start preparing for avoiding their premature career burnouts. Also in some cases this journey may help them to turn their attention towards other vocations in life which could even foliate priceless enjoyment.

Lastly, it discusses the age old dilemma in relationships between a man and a woman ... and without attempting to draw any conclusion just leaves it to one's own faculty, maturity and mental frequency to decide on how and what can create the resonance of two minds.

My gratitude goes to the author for turning this honest book out from his own sweatshop each page finely calligraphed in crimson.

An unputdownable read

Arunabha Sengupta's `The Best-Seller' is quite an unputdownable read. Set primarily in
Amsterdam, it's a story about a talented but struggling author, Sandeep Gupta, with eclectic interests ranging from writing and mathematics, to tai-chi and sting operations, who manages to get involved in the imbroglio of the IT corporate sector, through a planned identity swap with partial look-alike and old school-buddy Pritam Mitra, a renowned IT consultant. Pritam sets off Europe-trotting with his flame, the dashing Shruti Rattan, who by a strange concatenation of circumstances, is also known to Sandeep.

What follows is a gripping tale that's set rolling when the brilliant Sandeep, in a creative effort to save face, adapts the philosophy of the Gita to deliver a riveting presentation to an IT corporate audience about the role of the consultant in the ups and downs of the corporate world, how to negotiate the ephemeral transitions between highs and lows by performing one's functions assiduously but with a calm detachment from the fruits of action and how to survive the `Mayajal' (the web of illusions) of the corporate life and yet remain steadfast in one's goals. The highly original and non-conventional presentation catapults Sandip to high visibility levels within his group as well as the higher echelons of the company, much to his dislike, since this defeats the purpose of his staying under radar and promoting his writing career which had been his original intention.

We encounter corporate honcho, the visionary Ramesh, trying to team up with Sandip to market the new corporate philosophy which he predicts should reap rich dividends, the fundamentally insecure and domineering manager Madhu Deb with a secret crush on Sandip, the madly-in-love Amrita who is prepared to go any length for his affections (in some sense, playing Radha to Sandip's Krishna in this reader's opinion), the keenly observant, thoughtful and cynical Simon van der Weil, the electronically inclined psychiatrist Dr. Suprakash Roy.

The novel rolls on, through many twists and turns, following Sandeep's boisterous voyage on corporate seas. It finally comes to an end with a decision between the real, ethical and virtual world, between dedication and gimmicks, between love and obsession. The choice, as outlined by the Gita, lies with us.

Laced with acerbic wit and literary allusions, `The Best-Seller' manages to be both funny and tragic as well as flippant and profound at the same time.
The author's portrayal of characters is admirable, his erudition impressive, his narrative gripping. The philosophical discourses do have a tendency to get a little heavy at times and the length of the novel is formidable, but when all is said and done, I have little doubt that `The Best-Seller' will live up to its name.
