Good Writing & Good Spirit = Good Book

You have to love Alan Cohen. He has big, open heart and the writing skills of a novelist. He is able to cover familiar territory in a way that makes it fresh. He has a smooth style that makes you want to keep reading, even after you tell yourself, "okay, I have to wake up early for work tomorrow, better put it down (but you keep going)." Right from the opening when he talks about the Japanese physicist who cured himself of "terminal" cancer through his commitment to embracing everything that happens to him with gratitude (even the hard stuff; especially the hard stuff!), I was happily drawn in.

One of the things I really like about Alan is he's not afraid to reveal himself or write about his own insecurities or struggles --a nd how he deals with them. For instance, he tells us he can feel jealous of other successful writers (meanwhile, ironically, many feel jealous of his success), or that he doesn't look at the bookstore shelves when writing or he'd get too intimidated.

Another thing I appreciate is he takes a totally nonsectarian, diverse approach. He's as likely to quote a Buddhist master as a Christian mystic or a waitress. It's a testament to his open heart that he processes the world this way and that quality of his makes him a pleasure to read.

When It's Good, It's Very Good

I bought this book because I read a previous book by Cohen called "Why Your Life Sucks". Despite a title that sucks, that is a truly excellent book. So I had very high expectations for this book. For the most part I was not disappointed. Cohen's writing style is incredibly engaging and a joy to read. There is great wisdom in this book. Three-fourths of it is easily 5-star quality.

However, since his earlier book (first published in 2002) either Cohen has become much more mystical or he is much more willing to express those views. I was disappointed by some of the woo woo non-scientific claims made in this book. One particular example was that if humans believed they could regenerate lost limbs that we could. I think this was in a part that claimed all types of medicine work equally well.

Some people who read this kind of stuff in a book would probably knock it down to a 1 or 2-star rating. However, despite the disappointing parts, the good parts are still good and you can really benefit from his advice. He's an excellent writer and teacher. I recommend this book as long as you take the "out there" parts with the grain of salt they deserve. While I'm at it I highly recommend his earlier book mentioned above: Why Your Life Sucks

Enough Already - The Power of Radical Contentment Book Review

You know I like a book when large sections in every chapter are underlined and starred ***. Reading Alan Cohen's book Enough Already is like getting advice from a trusted friend who always seems to have all the right answers. As soon as you start reading, a calmness washes over you. He tells you that everything will be and is OK. He gives you permission to exhale and makes you feel better than when you started--trust me.

To give you a brief overview of the book, there are 32 chapters, each covering a different life topic including relationships, money, work and everything in between--all designed to teach through example how you can overcome the challenges in your life with a shift in perception.

Alan teaches us about money, relationships and all the issues in between through his personal stories. Alan says, "Enough Already can...mean refusing to accept any situation not in harmony with your well being. We have all engaged in relationships, business situations, and living arrangments that demean us or lack integrity. Upon recognizing that we have sold out to fit in, we must say no to what does not serve us so we can make space for what does. You cannot afford to settle for any situation that dampens your spirit. When you discovered you have detoured, you must do whatever it takes to return to the path of joy. Putting your foot down is a prerequisit to stepping ahead."

I'll step ahead by starting with the end in mind, the last chapter in the book called All Ready, Already. Alan says, "The thing you envision is already so, and you pluck it from universal mind. When the object of your intention becomes sufficiently real in your inner world, you generate the momentum to birth it in the outer world."

As I read this chapter, I thought about a professional Board I sit on. We run seminars several times a year so members can receive the continuing education credit they need to maintain their professional designation. A few years ago, a bad apple fell onto our Board. He was a State worker who always saw the glass half empty. His whole department was steeped in bad news coming out in the paper every day. In turn, he brought his negative energy to the Board--a Pig Pen person I call these people after the Charlie Brown character who walks around in a cloud of dirt.

Each time someone on the Board came up with an interesting topic for a seminar or a new speaker they wanted to invite in, Mr. Pig Pen always found a reason to shoot down the idea. "No, we can't do that. It will cost us too much." Or, "No, we'll never attract enough people to the seminar to afford that facility."

On and on he went. I decided to propose a new venue for our seminars--a boat. We would have an all day seminar aboard the Isle of Shoals Steamship then take a one hour guided tour down the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, New Hamsphire. I said, "Wouldn't it be great to get out of a hotel conference room and do something different?"

Everyone on the Board was excited about the idea except Mr. Pig Pen. "No, No, No, that will never work. That's the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard. No one will sign up for this seminar."

I said, "I'll bet you they will"

He said, "Fine. If we fail, it's all your fault."

I said, "We won't fail. We'll attract more people than we ever expected."

"You're dreaming," He replied.

The Board was watching the war of light and darkness play out. Several weeks went by and only a few people signed up. Pig Pen kept sending out "I told you so," emails to everyone. At one point he said, "I think we need to pull out and get our deposit back."

I told the other members, "His bad energy is sliming this seminar. I refuse to let this guy sink the ship." I sent prayers out and envisioned registrations coming in through Paypal. I get the Paypal email when someone registers so I looked through old Paypal registrations and imagined they were current registrations. Two weeks before the seminar, registrations started coming in.

On the day of the seminar, Mr. Pig Pen sat in the front row. I watched him as he was engaged as anyone in the topics of the seminar--topics he complained were too "touchy feely." The seminar included topics such as How to Think Outside the Box for Auditors, Reaching Higher, How to Sell Your Ideas to Key Stakeholders.

As I watched him from the back of the boat, I realized he was a man starving for inspiration. I wondered if he would learn something and drink in the inspired energy of the seminar or crawl back into the same dark hole he usually lived in.

Shortly after the seminar, he quit the Board. I had my answer. As Eckhart Tolle says in A New Earth and A Course in Miracles says, "Darkness can't exist in the presence of light. It finds it completely indigestible."

For me, the whole experience was a success. Others on the Board learned that a positive attitude attracts successful outcomes. They saw what a negative attitude could potentially do if it's not nipped in the bud. Everyone learned that they must believe in a successful seminar in advance for the reality to manifest just as Alan Cohen teaches in his book Enough Already.

I have one more secret to confess. I also saw (in advance) Mr. Pig Pen stepping off the Board. It was my Enough Already desire as a win-win solution for all concerned. The object of my intention (his departure) had become sufficiently real in my inner world, that I generated the momentum to birth it in the outer world (with his resignation). I can now say that I'm radically content with my participation on the Board. I plucked the outcome from the Unviersal mind.

The book contains the methods and bases of functional analysis that are directly adjacent to the problems of numerical mathematics and its applications; they are what one needs for the understand­ ing from a general viewpoint of ideas and methods of computational mathematics and of optimization problems for numerical algorithms. Functional analysis in mathematics is now just the small visible part of the iceberg. Its relief and summit were formed under the influence of this author's personal experience and tastes. This edition in English contains some additions and changes as compared to the second edition in Russian; discovered errors and misprints had been corrected again here; to the author's distress, they jump incomprehensibly from one edition to another as fleas. The list of literature is far from being complete; just a number of textbooks and monographs published in Russian have been included. The author is grateful to S. Gerasimova for her help and patience in the complex process of typing the mathematical manuscript while the author corrected, rearranged, supplemented, simplified, general­ ized, and improved as it seemed to him the book's contents. The author thanks G. Kontarev for the difficult job of translation and V. Klyachin for the excellent figures.

Oh, so much to say...I'm overjoyed! In 1984, Richard Stallman launched the GNU Project for the purpose of developing a complete UNIX-like operating system that would allow for free software use. What he developed was the GNU operating system. (GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not UNIX,'' and it is pronounced guh-NEW. Linux is a variant of the GNU operating system.) This biography traces the evolution of Stallman's eccentric genius from gifted child to teen outcast to passionate crusader for free software. To Stallman, free software is morally vital, and for the past two decades he has devoted his life to eradicating proprietary source codes from the world. Savvy programmers revere Stallman; Bill Gates reviles him. Much of the fascination with Stallman lies in his messianic zeal, which Williams, a freelance writer specializing in high-tech culture, has attempted to capture here, drawing on a number of interviews with the unconventional Stallman, his associates, fans, and critics. Sam Williams is a freelance writer living in Brooklyn, New York, and the author of O'Reilly's Free as in Freedom: Richard Stallman's Crusade for Free Software. He has covered high-tech culture, specifically software development culture, for a number of Web sites. From 1998-2001, he wrote "Open Season," a weekly column on the open source software community for Upside Today. He also has conducted interviews for the Web site BeOpen.com. His first book, ARGUING A.I.: The Battle for Twenty-First Century Science, was published by Random House in January 2002. Free as in Freedom is his second book.

A good book to those who have actually read it...

The reviewer who admittedly has not read the book also has no idea what context the author and Stallman use the word "free" in. This is "free" as in "freedom", as the title says. Not "free" as in "free beer", as they say.
Stallman's views are basically for free information. The base price of free software can be one dollar or 1000 dollars. The source code for it must be available, though, and it must be made distributable for those who want it. The idea is that interested programmers can add, improve, and change around the program for the benefit of everyone.
If we extend this purpose to include his book, as the reviewer implied, then it would still be completely valid. Source code (the English syntax) is available, so people can modify the book, and they can distribute it so that others can do the same. The base price can easily be [money]. The pricing is irrelevent if the other two conditions are met.
I suppose that the reviewer would know these things if he was qualified to review the book (that is, if he had read it, which he admittedly has not).
On the topic of the book itself, I enjoyed it immensely. It was definitely not too short, and most certainly not too long. It was just right for the type of story it was telling. The book focuses mostly on Stallman's life and his decisions and discoveries that he made that led him to start the Free Software Foundation.
Throughout the book, it becomes clear that Stallman is a very gifted man (he learned Calculus when he was seven), but it wasn't until his college years that he really found his niche. When he did, his gifts became apparent, and his true potentials came out.
I would encourage anyone who is interested in free or open-source software to read this book for the background on the man who started it all. His rationale is very thought-provoking, and makes you wonder about some of the other things in life that should be questioned, but now are simply taken for granted.

Overrated Book, Underrated Genius

Short story: this book deserves 2.5 stars at best. For the longer version, read on.
First the good news. Williams takes some pains to understand and accurately portray RMS, which, from all indications, is no easy task. FAIF, in taking this measured look, does supply some perspective to this at times under-appreciated contributor to the "new" computer revolution.
I also appreciated the eclectic trajectories of the author. First, Williams publishes FAIF under the Gnu Free Document License (GFDL), thereby making it a "free book". Although a completely natural step considering the subject matter, publishing the book as such is an important extension of the general principle that certain ideas should be freely accessible and modifiable. Second, he borrows from a range of excellent sources, even going so far as to reference "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" in the Epilogue!
Furthermore, the abridged history of the roots of hackerdom is particularly well done, if somewhat thickly worded. Attention was also clearly paid to chapter length, making that aspect of the book "readable" and pleasant.
Now for the not-so-good news. The writing style is far from fluid: I didn't feel as though I was lead through the events in the book so much as I was thrown into them. To make matters worse, some events were irrelevant (I still can't figure out why the treatment of RMS's mother's politics were given so much attention), others over-quoted (I can read Levy's "Hackers" myself), while still others were just plain inaccurate.
The last of these transgressions is certainly the most serious, and merits some detail. As one example, on page 143 Williams describes the Linux kernel as "a bored-out, super-charged version of Minix." He continues, "Rather than building their operating system from scratch, Torvalds and his rapidly expanding Linux development team had followed the old Picasso adage, 'good artists borrow, great artists steal'", alluding to his apparent belief that Linux is some sort of clever rehash of something that came before it.
These inaccuracies are not merely an excusable smudging of the facts. In "Just For Fun" (a source to which Williams points frequently enough), Torvalds dedicates *an entire chapter* (Chapter X) to debunking the mythical connections between Minix and Linux (no boring-out, no super-charging). Torvalds also evinces on pp. 77-8 in JFF (paperback edition), the processes involved in writing the operating system. "My terminal emulator grew legs", he says; later "I wrote a disk driver", and finally "I made my filesystem compatible with the Minix system". None of these actions so much as hints at borrowing, not to mention stealing, anything. In fact, at this point *all* of the work appears to be that of Torvalds, and *is* from scratch. (Of course, code reuse isn't a sin anyway, but rather should be-and frequently is-a blessing, as I'm sure RMS himself would readily admit. Regardless, the pejorative tone and inaccurate reporting is no less obnoxious for being subtle.)
Other examples of spin doctoring and untruths can also be found in uncomfortable abundance. Much of the combative posturing vis-à-vis the GNU/Linux and Open Source communities-particularly in relation to the personages of Torvalds and ESR, I found wholly unproductive. These egregious gestures on the part of Williams show a blatant bias to RMS, as either shunned hero or undeserved victim. Elements of both of these are likely true, but not likely to the degree expressed by Williams (or felt by RMS??). In any event, the lack of perspective by the author for his subject is journalistically weak.
And finally, Williams manages to hit a couple of lesser pet peeves of mine. Neither proofreading nor fact checking is my idea of pleasantly interacting with a book. Not only could FAIF have stood another reading before going to press, a spellchecker could have caught a number of obvious spelling errors. To those who would suggest that the GFDL is employed precisely to improve the book, I would suggest that the license should not be used as a shield to ward off criticism of sloppy work.
Anyway, if you want something concise, this will do. Fwiw, I'd advise checking out the site of the book online first, paying attention to the sources that sound interesting, and *reading those first*. Then go to gnu.org or slashdot.org and read items of interest about RMS there. If you still aren't satisfied, you can always go back to faifzilla and read FAIF online (it's more up to date anyway). If after that you STILL want the pen-and-ink version, you know where it's available.

Compelling profile of an very controversial maverick

It's hard to be neutral about Richard Stallman. Some people love him--others hate him. But he's been the key player in the free software movement. This nicely written book helps us to understand what makes him tick, and why he is what he is. It goes back to his youth and even includes interviews with his mother. The book is by no means a defense of Stallman. Instead, it probes beneath the surface and chronicles the events that have made him such a prominent and sometimes enigmatic figure among free software and open source developers.
While Stallman cooperated with the author, he has no financial connections with the book (to address the concerns of one reviewer here).

About the Author

Excellent pre-quel to the Windham family saga

I love Burrowes' books! I read "The Soldier" and was blown away by her writing and her wonderful characters; then I read "The Heir" and have followed up with all the stories of the Windham siblings. These are people I love to know. "The Courtship" is the story of how their parents (Percival, Duke of Moreland, and Esther, Duchess of Moreland) met and fell in love. The continuity with the novels is perfect. These wonderful parents have played important roles in the lives and stories of their children; now we get to know how their marriage and their unique relationship came about. Highly recommended back-story that adds additional richness to the Windham books.

A good presequal to the Windham series

In all the books in this series the author brings in the Duke and Duchess of Moreland,the parents, starting in the book "The Heir" Mostly they are rather minor characters but with an on-going presence. This short book tells about how the parents met (before Percy was the Duke) and is a charming story. I am waiting for the rest of their story as to where St. Just and Maggie enter the picture to be absorbed into the family. Nicely written and it is starting to fill in some of the gaps as to what happened before "The Heir" was written. If you are a reader who has been following this series I recommend this book. It could be read as a stand alone but I think some of the charm that comes with knowing the on going saga will be lost.

Grace Burrowes makes it look easy.

I know Esther and Percival, I've been reading about their children starting with The Heir and continuing with each new offering Grace Burrowes has gifted us with up to Lady Louisa's Christmas Knight. I might add that I am impatiently waiting for her next book. This novella gives us more insight to the Duke and Duchesse's love affair and shows just how their offspring became capable of such enduring love. I just admire Esther, she has such strength of character, enveloping her whole family with that love. This is a mixed family Percival wasn't always a Duke and he has children from earlier relationships. But this novella shows these two loving parents falling in love creating the bond that forms the bases of the Windham Dynasty. Great Job Grace Burrowes. You know I'm involved when I write a review, I'd rather be reading. This is a sincere Thank you to my author. Grace Burrowes is an author that can tell a satisfying story with few words and keeps you spell bound, impatiently waiting for her next effort. Did I mention I have all of her full-length books up to date..I thought so.
