About the Author

Denise L. Smith, PhD, is a professor in the department of health and exercise sciences and the class of 1961 term professor at Skidmore College. She also holds an appointment as a research scientist at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. She received her PhD from the University of Illinois in exercise physiology in 1990. For nearly two decades, Smith has conducted scientific research on cardiovascular responses to exercise. Her research is focused on the physiological strain associated with heat stress, with a specific emphasis on cardiovascular and thrombotic responses to firefighting. She has led several federally funded research projects dealing with the cardiovascular strain of firefighting.

Smith has published studies on heat stress, cardiovascular function, and the physiological aspects of firefighting in numerous peer-reviewed scientific journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Ergonomics, Journal of Thermal Biology, and Aviation, Space and Environmental Medicine. Smith has collaborated extensively with fire service organizations, has served in leadership roles in the American College of Sports Medicine, and is a member of the American Physiological Society.

Bo Fernhall, PhD, is a professor in the department of kinesiology and community health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received his PhD in exercise physiology from Arizona State University in 1984. Fernhall has nearly 30 years of experience in cardiovascular research, with a current focus on how exercise and diet affect heart, arterial, and autonomic function. He also directed cardiovascular rehabilitation programs for over 20 years, combining research and clinical experience.

Fernhall is a fellow of the American Heart Association, the American Association of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, and the American College of Sports Medicine. He was elected to the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education in 2005. He has won several national research awards, most recently the G. Lawrence Rarick National Research Award in 2006 for his research on the benefits of exercise in people with disabilities. Fernhall has published over 160 peer-reviewed manuscripts in scientific journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology, Amercan Journal of Hypertension, American Journal of Physiology, Atherosclerosis, European Heart Journal, and Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise.

School Required Book

I purchased this book for a class I recently took in a master's program. While I am a supporter of well written texts for academia this was a disappointment. From my perspective, it was so advanced in its content I often felt I needed to refer back to other texts or online support to attain a concept. Bottom line: this is a well written book, but you must know your stuff and know it well before expecting this book to enhance your exercise physiology base.

Great text for "middle of the road" physiogy students

This book is an excellent read for someone who has a basic understanding of physiology and is interested in delving into some of the more detailed mechanisms surrounding cardiovascular responses to exercise. However, I frequently have to refer to other texts and research articles in order to acquire the depth of knowledge that I find necessary. The language/ tone of the book is simplistic and easy to understand, which is a plus. So, if you have taken a physiology course or two, then I recommend this book. If you have taken multiple physiology classes, then the book can serve as a good secondary supplement to original research articles.

very good intro to emerging financial markets

I used this book as a secondary book in an MBA class in international financial institutions. The students liked the book (not the price) and I enjoyed teaching from these very well edited teaching notes. Actually, teaching notes is not the right way to describe the book - as each well-researched and well-written chapter focuses on a very specific area. It was easy to integrate the material across different institutions books. Warmly recommended. Only suggestion: needs updating.

Excellent - where is an update?

This is an excellent book as noted by the other reviewer. It is well organized, well-written and does an excellent job of presenting the context of finance in an emerging market. Although some of the book is now starting to get a bit dated, I still use a few selected chapters in International Finance classes. If it were updated, I could use the whole text.

This is a great self-help book

It is a quick read that gets to the point. I want my teenagers to read this as well. The book has important information that anyone can use to improve their lives. However, there were a few scriptures that were incorrect; hence, the premise of the book is to read the bible for yourself to find out the truth.

Wolfgang Kohler is renowned as one of the founders of Gestalt psychology and as the author of The Mentality of Apes , which detailed his experiments with simians on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, from 1914 to 1920. In this expose, Ley, professor of psychology at the State University of New York, shrilly claims to have uncovered a secret, one revealed to him by Kohler's chief assistant on Tenerife: the psychologist was a German spy during World War I. The author's investigations in England, East and West Germany and elsewhere in Europe confirmed for him that Kohler had served the German military by building, maintaining and operating a concealed radio that contributed to that country's war effort. Readers will consider that the jury is still out on the case, and that this overpadded book would have been more effective as a magazine article.

Fascinating and Important - Kohler remains a Hero

I read this book many years ago, after it was recommended to me by Michael Wertheimer (son of Max). It was a fascinating story. If you have any interest in the history of psychology, psychology and science during WWII and the holocost, or Gestalt Psychology, then this is really full of lots of interesting things. Wolfganf Kohler's work on insight in chimps seems to have been a cover for his espionage work in WWI. As his status grew, Kohler distanced himself from these times and this research.

One point that the author makes is that WWI was much different than WWII. We shouldn't confuse pre-Nazi Germany with the German nightmare that followed. Kohler seems to have followed his patriotic duty in WWI. In WWII, he was an anti-Nazi hero in a dangerous time and place. He generally stood up for his Jewish colleagues and bravely communicated his discontent before he had to leave Nazi Germany. So I hope this book doesn't serve to villify Kohler in any way. One gets the sense that his family felt the need to cover up Kohler's past, but I didn't read anything that deteracted from his heroic nature. (Compare this to, say, Konrad Lorenz' Nazi past).

I remember talking to Richard Held, the emminent MIT psychologist, about this book. He was one of Kohler's students in the U.S. He emphasized this point, and emphasized that Kohler was a man of remarkable integrity. I believe this!

I'm currently reading another remarkable book on Gestalt Psychologists. This one is the long-awaited book on Max Wertheimer and Gestalt Psychology by Michael Wertheimer and Brett King. Highly recommended!

Surprisingly engaging story of a key figure in the development of the field of psychology, who is usually presented in a pretty contained, one-dimensional, academic light. The easy-going, good-natured, yet persistent sleuthing by Ronald Ley uncovers surprises and twists, not only for those interested in the fathers of psychology, but anyone who thought they knew everything there was to know about the Germans and the World Wars.
