About the Author
Lawrence S. Cunningham is John A. O'Brien Professor of Theology (Emeritus) at the University of Notre Dame. The author or editor of over 25 books and hundreds of essays and reviews, his books reflect his interest in the history of Christian spirituality, hagiography, the intersection of theology and culture, as well as the relationship of contemplation and action. Cunningham is the recipient of three honorary doctorates and the winner of Notre Dame's Presidential Award for service to academy and church (2002) and the Christus Magister award from the University of Portland in 2011 for distinguished scholarship and teaching. He has served as a visiting lecturer in this country and in Europe, Asia, and South Africa. His most recent academic book is INTRODUCTION TO CATHOLICISM (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and is currently serving as the Christianity editor for the forthcoming NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF WORLD RELIGIONS.

A native of England, John J. Reich was trained as a classical archaeologist and did both his undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Manchester. He is an authority on Minoan civilization, pre-Roman Italy, and music. Professor Reich is associated with the Syracuse University study program in Florence, Italy. Reich lectures frequently in Europe and the United States on history, art, and the humanities and is the author of many scholarly articles and several books, including ITALY BEFORE ROME (1979).

Deceiving pictures

I did not want to give this book a bad rating because honestly, I have no idea if this is a good book or not. The problem I had with it is that the pictures on the amazon website are deceiving. This book contains the readings for the culture and values book, as the title says. However, when you click on the picture that says "look inside" it shows pictures of the real book Culture and Values, and not for Readings for Cunningham/Reich's Culture and Values. When I bought this, I thought I was buying the real book. Apparently not. I ended up having to return the book. I write this so this does not happen to you. Hopefully Amazon can fix this issue.

About the Author
Do you have any art school teachings or formal training?

I have a university degree in graphic design. I learn color's theory and the use of the airbrush, but never illustration nor drawing of the human figure. I learn everything of self-taught way. Most of my technique was the result of copy many Sorayama's paintings. I follow the step-by-step way to make paintings, in the end of Sorayama's books.

How long have you been painting?

My mother says that I draw since I was born. I believe in her because she conserves many drawings of me when I was I baby. I start draw nude womens since 9 years old, the very first time I own (rob from my uncle) a playboy magazine. I draw pin-up from 1993 that is the year when I learn to use airbrush.

Were you interested in art when you were growing up as a kid in Mexico? In 1977 I was 8 years old. I don't draw too much in that age. My "principal power" was molding plasticine. I do all the cartoon characters in plasticine. One night my mother take me to the cinema to see one movie called "Star Wars". When we are out of the cinema I was shook of the emotion. I was seen the most impressive movie in my short life. I arrives at my house running and my mother told me go to sleep, but I did not listen to her. I take the plasticine and start doing all the movie characters r2-d2, darth vader, x-wing, death star... I tried to make it fast, I was afraid to forget them all, but I was not quickly enough. So in my desperation I uses my "secondary power" and I start to draw. I draw too fast all night. I don't sleep that night. Star Wars make me the artist who I am now.

Are you the only artist in your family? No, my mother knows how to paint also - not professionally, but she does well. Why do you choose women as your subjects? Woman is the most beautiful thing ever created. Not landscapes, not rainbows, not stars, not flowers. Womens are more beautiful than anything.

Good but dated

If you more or less know how to make a wooden box but don't have any specific training that would lead you to have an immediate answer to questions like "which measurement should I take first?" or "should I put the edge banding on before or after assembly?" then this book is exceptionally helpful. You might have to dig through a lot of it to find the bit of information you're after, but it's probably in there somewhere regardless of whether you're building face frame or European cabinets.

While the vast majority of this information is timeless, there are a number of products available to the casual hobbyist these days that can greatly simplify processes that would have required tens of thousands of dollars worth of piano-sized equipment to accomplish at the time of this book's original writing. From track saws to Kreg jigs and Festool's pricey-but-still-cheaper-than-an-hour-of-a-contractor's-time LR-32 indexing system, you just don't have to be a full-time pro to zip through a lot of precision cutting and drilling tasks as quickly as one anymore. In that sense, the material is fairly dated, and while that's not really a crime of any sort, it does have the unfortunate side-effect of leading some people to believe there's simply no way they could ever be good enough to build the cabinets of their dreams. Obviously, some of those people will be right, but others may find themselves unnecessarily discouraged if they aren't already knowledgeable enough about such things to have a Mafell dealer on speed dial.

I'd still recommend the book, just don't make the mistake of thinking that *everything* the author describes is necessarily the best possible way to do something.

Possibly the best book on standard cabinet making. Careful, thorough description of the standard processes, discussion of alternatives, and excellent, clear illustrations all make this book well worth the cost. this is the revised, second edition.

Complete is very true, especially as compared to others.

I have both this book, and the "Kitchen Cabinets Made Simple" book. Studied them both. My take is, if you are patient, and really want to learn about building and installing cabinets, this is the book for you.
If you are not patient, and think, "just tell me how to build a damn cabinet" maybe the "made simple" book might be more your speed.

This book is about twice the content by page count alone, and the "information density" how much is conveyed with fewer pages/words increases this even more. the "made simple" book is a quicker, easier read, and you can be out building some (likely suitable) cabinets quickly.

However, this book teaches you the ins/outs of all the choices you might make (perhaps frustrating the impatient reader) which I liked. I also note some differences in approach. Mr Lang makes some design choices that may make for a better result down the road. His method for constructing the back of the cabinet and "nailer" can more readily accomodate imperfections in the wall during installation time (installation isn't really covered in the "simple" book).
Also, the "simple" book technique leverages the factory edges of the plywood, assuming that these are straight and square. Lang explains that you can't rely on factory edges being square, and shows you how to: a) determine if they are out of square, and if so, b) how to mitigate this.
Lang goes into great detail about making a storyboard, making lists, using spreadsheets, cut-lists, installation, really giving you insight into the thinking of a pro cabinet maker. I've read the entire book, and now reading again, and now the first chapters make more sense, having the perspective of all the info in the later chapters in my head now.
You might at first get frustrated that Lang is a bit like a newscaster, reporting all the options, and giving you the ins/outs of each option, but never really saying "I like this one best" (but the pro/con lists he does gives you a good clue), but as you get through it, you will discover they way he "often does it" or "likes to do it" for certain things. If you understand, follow, and execute the advice in this book, you should be able to build a fine set of cabinets, and understand and explain your choices to others and yourself.

I did get good info from the "simple" book, but as a more patient guy who wants more info on "why" I'm doing something, and don't mind reading twice as much info to get there...I like Lang's book better. If I wanted a more simple, step A, B, C approach to building cabinets, I might prefer the Paolini book ( I just ain't that guy).

GREAT BLEND OF INSTRUCTION AND INSPIRATION

This is unlike any other cartooning book past or present. Too many cooks of this genre show you the standard "draw an oval and a triangle and now you have a duck!" or "draw like I do!" instructions. Art Roche's book teaches kids to think, to imagine, to be funny. Art gives readers the tools to pursue their styles, not his. It's an easy read, full of great illustrations, and humorous examples. Art Roche makes anyone from from 4 to 84 want to pick up a pencil and have fun! Great gift for any kid or kid at heart.

My 12-year-old picked up this book and devoured it in one sitting, reporting it helped him conquer some of the problems he had encountered as a recreational cartoonist. He especially enjoyed the section devoted to writing.

This is a gorgeous book - hardcover with color on every page. Great art, lively text, and very inspiring - it works as both a "how-to" and personal cartooning cheerleader.

In this workshop MK holds up Alekz as the foremost of his Knowledge Seekers, the only one so far to have understood what he was talking about and interpreted that into hardware – easily assembled in anybody’s kitchen, small cells constructed in a few minutes, and then strung together with nano coated copper wire in such a way that he has been supplying not only his own house but the whole street with power, and also he has not put any fuel into his car since March 2015 – coming up to 6 months as of this writing in September 2015… As of this re-edit in February 2016 the process has continued and the cells have now been refined into split capacitor/batteries to power the Magrav units and the spaceships now being built – but it is still a fascinating thing to go back over the 68th workshop and appreciate the organic nature of the process.

A huge collection

What the Grimm Brothers did for fairy tales in Germany, Afanas'ev did for Russia. Over the course of his lifetime(1826-1871), he collected countless of these wonderful little stories from common folk, just as the Grimms did. This collection contains stories of adventure and enchantment, animal fables and more. Included are stories of Vasilissa and Baba Yaga, the witch whose house was built on chicken feet, and the famous story of the giant turnip. There's even some stories about vampires. But be prepared, this book is huge! And every bit of it distinctly Russian.

I have owned since 1975 a copy of an earlier, hardcover, Pantheon reprint edition of this superb collection, which was originally published in 1945. I have used it for both light reading and for serious study (while in courses on Baltic and Slavic Folklore and Folktale Studies). The selection and translation of stories both seem first-rate. (For the latter, I have had to rely on the opinions of those who actually read Russian, instead of just having studied it in school.) The accompanying illustrations are properly enchanting -- and only occasionally are placed where they give away the point of the story.

The only real drawback is that it is still merely a selection from about three volumes (depending on the edition you prefer) of "skazki." This is the Russian term for oral tales of marvels, adventures, and misadventures, equivalent to the German "Maerchen." In both cases, the English term "Fairy Tale" is the conventional, but not really adequate, translation. (As usual in large collections, only a handful of tales concern anything like fairies.) One of the requirements for the selection seems to have been that the tales chosen should be acceptable to American parents in the 1940s, but otherwise the considerable variety of the original seems to have been largely preserved. The suggested reader age of "9 to 12" conceals the pleasure that adult readers with interests in folklore or Russian culture will derive from the volume. Fortunately, they may be lead to it by the fine supplementary material at the end, although this is now half a century old.

Afanas'ev (various transliterations) was one of the many nineteenth-century collectors inspired by the Grimms,. By most accounts he was one of the most responsible, even though his practices of recording and documenting texts are hardly up to modern standards. (Neither were those of the Grimms, for that matter.) The main collection from which this was excerpted was the sourcebook for Vladimir Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale," a key work in modern folktale studies, but as Roman Jakobson (yes, the Structural Linguist) points out in his commentary to this collection, the book had already established itself as a gem of Russian literature, an inspiration and resource for poets.

What a fun book!

Fairy tales get us into the psyche of a culture. Americans see themselves as Paul Bunyan and Johnny Appelseed, conquoring the frontier. This book introduces us to the Russian psyche. It shows us how they look at things--the world, society, life, family, and government.
Some of the stroies are charming, such as the fabel of the Turnip and the Honey-pot. Other stories made absolutley no sense. But I had fun trying to crack these weird nuts.
I enjoyed the translation. It is not as energetic as Seamus Heaney, or J. B. Phillipws, but it is readable, athough you realize that you are reading a translation.
C. S. Lewis, in his preface to "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," mentions that as children we read fairy tales, then we outgow them. Then, as adults, we come back to these stories and read them with different eyes. I had that experince with this book.
