"Mannerism, the sophisticated and sometimes perverse interpretation of Renaissance style, determined the taste of customers and fashion in the goldsmiths' workshops for nearly a hundred years from about 1540. During this time something more than the competent exercise of his craft was expected of the goldsmith; the more complex the design and original the invention, the more admiration it attracted. As a result, profuse and fantastic embellishments were imposed upon familiar utensils of everyday life. The artists who contributed their ideas and invention to the new versions of classical models, upon which most sixteenth-century forms were based, were not necessarily working goldsmiths; they included masters of the arts of painting, sculpture and engraving. The designs which emerged made few concessions to function, for their creators intended to offer their clients essays in virtuosity."
This scholarly study examines the art of the Mannerist goldsmith in Europe in a degree of detail not hitherto attempted in any language. The fifteen chapters discuss the following aspects of the subject:
