About the Author
Dr. Gary A. Porter earned M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Dr. Porter taught at several universities, including San Diego State; Loyola University Chicago; and the University of Montana; and has served as a department chair. He is currently Distinguished Lecturer at Drake University. Widely published and the recipient of numerous teaching awards, Dr. Porter has conducted workshops on introductory accounting education and corporate financial reporting, has worked as a staff accountant with Deloitte & Touche, and has actively served the Illinois CPA Society, American Accounting Association, and Financial Executives International.
Dr. Curtis L. Norton received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University and an M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota. He is currently Clinical Professor of Accounting at Arizona State University. As Professor of Accounting at Northern Illinois University for more than 30 years, Dr. Norton earned the University Excellence Teaching Award and has published in THE ACCOUNTING REVIEW, THE JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTING EDUCATION, CPA JOURNAL, as well as other journals. A member of the American Accounting Association and Financial Executives International, he also consults and conducts training for private and governmental authorities, banks, and utilities.

Financial Accounting Made Harder

Oh where to start. First off, the book that I received had two Chapter 2's. Yes, that's correct, it had two chapter two's but to make up for it, it did not have a chapter 3 and part of chapter 4. But I'm sure that is just a flaw with the copy I received.
The exercises, problems, etc in the back of the chapters all have the same numbering system. For example the Excercises for chapter 4 are labled as 4-1, 4-2, 4-3... However, the problems are also labled in the same fashion; 4-1, 4-2, 4-3... etc. Between the "Warmup Exercises," "Brief Exercises," "Exercises," "Problems, and "Decision Cases," they all use the same exact numbering system. So you really have to check and double check that you are working on the correct assigned problem, exercise, or whatever.
The book is not written very well. In fact to complete an answer for a homework problem in Chapter 7 you actually have to do research in Chapter 12. Sure it mentions the subject in Chapter 7 and states this will be covered in detail in Chapter 12. Sure enough, that is where you need to go to be able to answer the problem in the back of Chapter 7.
I have had to research more of the topics in the chapters online to get a better understanding of what the authors are trying to explain. It is almost as if they are going out of their way to make it harder then it needs to be.
Anyway, as always, this is just my opinion.

Understanding Accounts is easier with this book

The book has clear objectives at the beginning of each chapter. Excercises are also clear, although unrealistic; however, for the purpose of understanding accounts in a simple way examples in the book work very well.
Terminology is standard and straight forward.

Excellent Textbook

This book has a wealth of knowledge to users of accounting information. I can confidently say that i can read financial statements of firms, now. Prior to reading this book i was very indimidated when it came to reading financial statements but now i can pick any financial statement and understand what they all are talking about. The way Porter & Norton explained the concepts makes it clear to anyone what they are reading in the financials. Very well written book, worth every penny!
