I looked all over the net trying to find a ITIL SOA book. Some of the online material picked this one over "How to Pass on Your First Try Certification Study Guide" titles.

Pro- cost, condensed

Con- seemed some process areas were sold short, I noted this on the exam

I would not rely on this as a sole title, the financial management chapter was a little short and some other areas in the another chapter were either "oversight" or not properly addressed against the 2011 Syllabus. I was hoping the practical exam would have been more than what I already had received from the ATO.

Gets the Job Done

In reviewing this book, I'm reminded about the famous quote that democracy is the worst form of government except for every other one.

The task of taking a large, complex topic such as critical theory and presenting it in primer fashion makes it inevitable that there will be places where the more knowledgeable or experienced reader feels like the person undertaking that task is being reductive. And it would be easy enough to pick on the book's idiosyncrasies: the psychoanaltyic chapter is too narrowly Freudian, the deconstruction chapter has trouble explaining how the practice (explained fine) developed from the theory, the reader-response chapter neglects later responses to some initial criticisms of the theory.

But these are the sorts of complaints that will be levied by those who aren't the target audience, and to make them is to wish for a book that is both an introduction for undergraduates and a more thorough encyclopedia for scholars. The book isn't trying to be the latter.

As an introductory work, Texts and Contexts is actually pretty good. The prose is clear and avoids overloading students with too much jargon or too many technical terms too quickly. It is also one of the few primers I've run across that tries to address practice rather than just theory--that tries to show what a _______ critic does rather than just what _______ criticism is.

Another plus is that the bibliographies at the end of each chapter, while short, are very serviceable, and provide students with a list of key readings in each area of criticism that can help them get started at being more thorough in the area in which they are most interested in.

If there is one thing I seriously hate about the book it is that it is one of those "designed to be text"books that comes out in a new edition every other year. I've had every edition since the second, and the changes are pretty superficial. (As I right this, it's now in the fifth edition.) Unless absolutely required (say by a professor) to buy the latest edition, readers would be better served to get a used, older edition on Amazon--they are usually less than a quarter of the price of the new edition.

Favorite Intro Lit Textbook

A number of years back, Mortimer Adler, he of the Paedeia Program and the wonderful Great Books Series, probably the last publically successful canonical venture before we starting deconstructing the canon, wrote a bestseller which was at the time regarded as a classic: "How To Read a Book". Lynn has written the book that Adler was trying to write.

After years spent reading and teaching the humanities, I've learned that we don't spend a whole lot of time thinking about how we read. That conclusion, in simple, funky Americanese, is, in as many words, what, I think, Jacques Derrida was trying to say in a lot more. And if words are, in a sense, metaphors, it's that much more imperative that we get a handle on our method of reading, that we become mindful of our processes of comprehension. Teaching mindful comprehension, a method of reading that sticks, is the main task of college level pedagogy in the humanities.

Lynn's book is a masterpiece of organization and concision. He begins by briefly describing the seven + basic approaches to reading which, in contemporary academic parlance, go under the rubric of critical theory, and then proceeds to devote a chapter to each, examining, in simple, clear, and accessible terms and demonstrations, what value the particular approach under discussion has for understanding the text.

Lynn's writing is lucid, accessible, exemplary. His citations are edifying, central. His examples are, well . . . textbook. The book as a whole is remarkably comprehensive in a svelte, easy-to-hand, state-of-the-art format. I challenge Freshman English or Language Arts instructors to find better than what we have here.

A great introductory text for AP English

I use this book to introduce literary theory to my AP high school seniors. The explanations of the theories are accessible, the sample essays provide great models, and the suggested strategies for critical writing effectively allow my students to engage with both work and theory. Impressive... AND the author maintains a sense of humor which adds to the readability. Wow!

A great work by the old master of aircraft flight control

Duane McRuer is known in the field as the grandfather of the field of aircraft flight control. His BuAer reports were among the key references used by flight control designers. This book summarizes much of what was in these reports and presents an integrated picture of flight control system design. His unique approach to classical control theory and multiloop control system design alone makes this an interesting book.

Oh...crazy, but it feels alright!

Im no fast reader all the time, it tends to take me ages to finish reading a book, but not if its a book from this author. I started reading it the moment i hit 'one click'. The only thing that hindered me to go 100-120kph is the fact that my pile of work was waiting for me (bummer) so i maintained my reading speed at 50-60 kph LOL.

BilPop volume 3 is gnarly and scintillating. The author knows how to grab her readers' attention and hold into it for the duration. Eve Montelibano have laced the story with the thrill factor, the gasp & Ohhh factor, the laughs & cheesy factor. My Lord!!! I couldn't contain my laugh out loud (was actually snorting) with that scene 'a car is coming'. Giane was pissed off bigtime because he was not able to come ahead of the car. (bahahaha)

"Cara, im amazed i dont lose a boner when you make me laugh like an idiot in the middle of it."---- The feeling is the same when you are reading this story, you dont lose the hype and amazeballs amidst the laughter.

I loved how the author delivered the steamy scenes. She has the talent of making her readers get engrossed with each characters. That after reading the story they'll feel like they own the hero or heroine already!

Im beginning to love Italian heroes.

In Drive her Mad, Giane and Valenna signed up for a no-string-attached week of carnal explorations after Valenna's cherry was popped up. Giane felt that one night of sexual explorations wasnt enough, he got addicted to Valenna's cherry. This is actually a kind of a get-to-know each drama with a gnarly scenes, laughs and squeals. That windshield scene though.. lol its etched in my memory already hahaha. Valenna humping a Zoldatti in the middle of nowhere with her lover watching...eeeehhh you should read this and tell me if that woman in the movie who humped a ferrari is way better than Valenna LOL

I kinda like tha VISA and HSBC thingie..that would go straight into my chest of jokes.

I think there's a good amount of family drama coming after this volume. Giane's demons are slowly bouying up in this volume. Likewise Valenna's emotional state starts to go on to the next level.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a good read. I enjoyed this so far!

Hot,hot,hot! I love the sweetness of the Giane and Valena. Even if they are not familiar with each other, they give themselves a chance to know each other and share a wonderful moment of a lifetime. Can't wait for the next scene to come.

About the Author
Gordon L. Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70 and subsequently in airborne infantry, long-range patrol and intelligence assignments until retiring after 26 years. He was a Special Operations Forces scenario writer at the Joint Readiness Training Center for 12 years and is now a freelance writer, living in Texas. The author lives in Cyprus, TX.

Fills in some needed information!

This work is another in the series dedicated to WWII infantry combat by Osprey. These books explain the 'nuts and bolts' of infantry combat using a 'How and with What' approach that makes clearer what is read in WWII history is accomplished for those of us fortunate enough to be reading it sitting is a comfortable chair!

World War II Battlefield Communications is a much needed look in to how units communicated with each other under operational conditions. It looks at American, Commonwealth, Russian, German and Japanese equipment and operational practice individually after casting light on the basics of visual, wire and wireless communication common to all. The illustrations and pictures are well placed in the narrative to increase the subject comprehension like all the previous books in this series.

For me, this gave me some idea on how various battles I have read about were affected by communication or lack thereof. This subject has long needed to be addressed in a fairly brief, clear and concise matter and this book goes a long way to filling in this gap. My only complaint would be is that it could be more in depth but this is not the purpose of these books!

I highly recommend this to anyone curious about this aspect of WWII infantry combat!

This short book is a general overview of telephone and radio communications used by all major combatants during the war. As a result, there isn't a lot of detailed information on the equipment and procedures of each combatant. Someone could probably write a decent sized book just on German field telephone communications alone.

A very good overview of these systems

Any review of this book would have to start out by stating that it is relatively short, at about 65 pages (a third of which consist of photographs, color plates and other types of illustrations). Despite this short length, however, it provides a very good overview of tactical battlefield communications systems used during the Second World War at the regiment and brigade level and below. It covers these communication systems for the US, Britain, Soviet Union, Germany and Japan. The systems covered include (not necessarily in order of importance) field telephones, radios, visual signals (such as flares, smoke, flags, marker panels, signal lights and arm and hand signals), messengers and audible signals. Not only are very detailed technical details regarding each of these (i.e., frequencies radios operated on, weight, etc.), but there is a good discussion of how, tactically, they were used as well as their strengths and weaknesses (per and relative to each other). In addition, there are very good photographs and color plates and illustrations that would prove of some value (or at least a decent starting point) for the figurine and diorama builder.

Not only is this provided but signal units are discussed as well as distribution of these systems by unit type (i.e., at the platoon, squad, etc. levels). The procedures used for each are also discussed. Last but not least many tidbits of information are provided that would be of interest to WWII aficionados. For example, the Soviet Union had little communication equipment and most of what it did have was of foreign manufacture, radio communications during the period were quite rudimentary relative to what they are today (to say the least) and telephones were the most preferred (and most reliable) form of communication, despite their many drawbacks.

In short, the reader receives quite an education regarding the physical characteristics of these systems, their tactical use, the organizational structure they were used under and the procedures required for their use. A very good survey for those interested in an overview of the subject. On the negative side the book is a bit dry, due to its technical nature, but how can a book on this subject not be?
